If an editor gets unjustly arrested twice, then what must be happening with common people ?

Mr. Madhusudan Kulkarni arrested and released !

Reporters of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’ investigated !

Today police from Miraj city police station investigated the reporters of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’, Mr. Ajay Kelkar and Mr. Sachin Kaulkar. The police asked both the reporters various questions, including, ‘Who did the news reporting of the beating up of Pujya Sambhajirao Bhide and the Miraj riots?’, ‘Do you know Malgonda Patil?’ and took down their statements.

Miraj (Maharashtra): On 10 November, Miraj city police had arrested the editor of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’, Mr. Pruthviraj Hazare, placing alleged charges of creating communal disharmony and violating the code of conduct during election. The court had then ordered two days’ police custody to Mr. Hazare. Today upon completion of the police custody, Mr. Hazare was presented before the court. The police made Mr. Madhusudan Kulkarni the co-defendent and demanded one day of police custody for both Mr. Hazare and Mr. Kulkarni. However, the court dismissed the request and ordered judicial custody. Both of them were released on bail after that. While making Mr. Kulkarni the co-defendent, the police alleged that he had helped in the crime.

Then police arrested Mr. Hazare the second time for a crime reported on 4 October 2008. When police demanded five days’ police custody in this case, the second civil judge Jaidev Ghule dismissed it. On 28th and 29th February 2008, the following instructions were published in ‘Dainik Sanatan Prabhat’: ‘Take training to protect the respected leaders of Hindus like Sambhajirao Bhide from police atrocities ! Contact Sanatan for organising such training classes !’ and ‘Instead of inconveniencing the public by damaging buses and private vehicles, take action against the arrogant police like naxalites do.’

In this case police today lodged a complaint against Mr. Hazare under sections 153 (a) (b), 189, 505, 34 and demanded five days’ police custody. At the time, investigating officer, Mr. Nimbalkar and public prosecutor, Ms. Nimbalkar presented the government’s stand, justifying the demand for police custody. They said, ‘Police custody is needed to investigate further in this case to find out who induced him to write such things. Also, the other defendants in this case, the printer and the publisher need to be taken into custody.’ At the time, on behalf of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’, Adv. Vasudev Thanedar said, “Police have not taken any action for a year in this complaint, which was lodged last year. In the meantime, Mr. Hazare was taken into police custody for another crime; the police could have investigated him at that time itself. Hence, the reasons provided by the public prosecutor are not sufficient.” The judge accepted this argument and dismissed the demand of the police to give five days’ police custody to Mr. Hazare. Then Mr. Hazare was granted bail.
