‘Love jihad’ on official agenda of BJP’s UP unit, meet today

The BJP state president had raised an incident in Faizabad where a Hindu girl was allegedly murdered by a Muslim youth.

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) : The Uttar Pradesh unit of BJP has decided to include the issues of ‘love jihad’ and conversion of Hindus on the agenda for its two-day state executive committee meet, which begins in Mathura on Saturday. The decision came days after RSS wing Dharma Jagran Manch launched a campaign against ‘love jihad’, which refers to Hindu girls being allegedly converted to Islam for marriage, in the state.

BJP national president Amit Shah will inaugurate the state executive meeting in which all state and national leaders from Uttar Pradesh will participate and draft the party’s action plan for the 2017 Assembly elections.

“Issues of ‘love jihad’ and conversion of Hindus would be raised during discussions over law and order situation in the state and the party will also draft its future action plan to fight against these issues,” said state party president Laxmikant Bajpai.

Bajpai said that recent incidents of communal tension in Saharanpur, Moradabad, Meerut and Ambedkar Nagar would also be discussed.

“Love jihad had so far been on the agenda of RSS only. The BJP has now started raising voice against it after coming to power at the Centre,” said another BJP leader.

During a workers’ convention held in the presence of Shah recently, the BJP state president had raised an incident in Faizabad where a Hindu girl was allegedly murdered by a Muslim youth. Local BJP leaders of Faizabad suspected it to be a case of ‘love jihad’. Shah had blamed “vote bank politics” and “appeasement policy” of the Samajwadi Party government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

The Dharma Jagran Manch of RSS on Raksha Bandhan festival had started a seven-day campaign, appealing to Hindus for support in curbing ‘love jihad’ and requesting  Hindu girls not to “fall prey” to such youths who lure them to get converted.

“Hindu mahilaon ka apmaan, nahi sahenge, nahi sahenge, (We will not tolerate the humiliation of Hindu women)”a handful of well-dressed city dwellers who descended on Sarawa village, 60 km east of Delhi, shouted outside the tumbledown house of a 20-year old girl who was allegedly raped and forcibly converted to Islam. Rakhi Tyagi, who led the women, said she was the Uttar Pradesh state general secretary of the Mahila Morcha, the women’s wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to a police complaint filed on August 3, the girl was abducted, kept in custody and raped by several men before being converted to Islam. Allegations are yet to be ascertained, said Alok Sharma, Inspector General of Police. “Only the girl can tell us truth, and whatever she says would be deemed true. The problem occurs when she gives contradictory versions.”

Ambiguities in the girl’s and her parents’ accounts of the incidents may impede the investigation but not the politics fuelled by the fact that the girl is a Hindu and the accused are Muslims. Dr Chandramohan, spokesperson of the UP State BJP, surrounded by several other party leaders at his home, told The Hindu, “This is part of a global love jihad that targets vulnerable Hindu girls who are entrapped and forced to convert to Islam. The BJP will oppose forced conversions and intervene on behalf of the victims,” he said, adding that social organisations would intensify awareness among the Hindus to be alert.

Awareness rallies

One such social organisation is (Religious Awakening), an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). Rajeshwar Singh, its coordinator for the western UP region told The Hindu by phone from Agra that from August 23 to September 15, there would be rallies in all districts against conversions. “This incident has brought forth the urgency of the question of conversions yet again,” he said.

Mr Singh said the “real test of strength” would be in December, when his organisation plans to convert Muslims and Christians to Hinduism in two separate programmes.

“On December 23, the martyrdom day of Swami Shraddhanand (the leader of the 19th century Shuddhi (re-conversion) movement) we will convert Muslims to Hinduism in at least 50 locations in west UP,” he said. “On December 25, the day when Christians convert people to their religion, this year, we will do the reverse – by converting them back to Hinduism. In two-three years, the rural hinterland will be free of Christians.” Asked how he planned to convince people to become Hindus, he said: “It will be a test of who is stronger. Hindus or them. You just wait and watch.”

RSS gets ready to tackle religious conversions

Lucknow (News Delhi) : The conversion and alleged rape of a woman inside a Meerut madarsa has angered the Sangh Parivar, which directed its cadres to ‘spot and report’ all such activities whether mutual or forced across Uttar Pradesh.

The exercise to collect ‘data and details’ is underway and the saffron outfit is planning to strike back with ‘Shuddhikaran’ — an exercise aimed at winning those converted into either Islam or Christianity back to Hinduism.

The RSS’s Dharm Jagran Vibhag would soon launch mass awareness campaigns across UP, especially in western region where the Parivar has spotted an increase in religious conversions. The vibhag would also organize ‘homecoming’ ceremony of those youths it has rescued on December 25.

A volunteer of Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) said, “In places where there are strong Hindu leaders like Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhpur, who is an MP and mayor Shakuntala Bharti in Aligarh, religious conversions are markedly less. But with a favourable government and police, one has to remain vigilant 24×7 as newer ways are being developed to convert Hindus.”

Another saffron activist said, “In January 2013, we took out a Hindu Jago yatra after there were a series of incidents of love jihad. Back then, many madarsas in Meerut and Hapur had been reported for dubious activities but police remained indifferent.”
