Dr. Jose Pereira Issue: CM handed over the Memorandum furnished by HJS to DGP

September 10, 2010

Bhadrapad Shuddha Dwitiya/Trutiya, Kaliyug Varsha 5112

Panaji (Goa): Dr. Jose Pereira had displayed nude and obscene pictures of Hindu Deities painted by him in an exhibition. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had made a complaint through a mail to the Chief Minister of Goa, Shri. Digambar Kamat stating that these pictures had hurt Hindus’ religious feelings. HJS had also included in the mail the said pictures painted by Dr. Jose Pereira. CM has handed over this mail to the Director General of Police. This information was conveyed to HJS by CM’s office.

The mail sent by HJS to CM has mentioned that the denigrating pictures had hurt Hindus’ religious feelings. The said pictures are Dr. Pereira’s imaginations and they are painted in a perverted mood. The pictures are instrumental in misguiding Hindus. Dr. Jose Pereira has insulted Hindus deliberately. There is unity among Hindus and Christians in Goa. There is a possibility that these pictures might create a rift among these two communities. Hence it is necessary for the Chief Minister to pay serious attention to this.

Dr. Jose Pereira Issue: The Herald published HJS clarification

No freedom to insult

By Niranjan Chodankar, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti

We would like to clarify views expressed in the following articles: ‘Goa’s Michelangelo and his detractors’ by Dr Subodh Kerkar. (Herald Mirror,1 August), ‘Sanatan as Art Critic’ by Frederick Noronha (Herald, 4 August), ‘Goan Artists decry HJS protest’ (Herald, 8 August) and ‘Banish the Extremist Groups’ (Sunday Mail, Herald, 8 August).

The criticism levelled against the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) over its protest against the nude and derogatory paintings of Hindu Gods by Dr Jose Pereira is not correct. It gives a wrong impression to the readers about HJS.

The HJS has objected to only those paintings by Dr Jose Pereira of the Hindu Gods that hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Picture No 1: Shiva the Dance Connoisseur (Rasika Shiva): Lord Shiva is watching the dance of two nude women. So is Lord Vishnu and two associates. Dr Pereira claims he has drawn this picture after seeing the art in the Thanjavar temple.

Picture No 2: Shiva, Seductive Beggar (Bhikshantana Shiva): Lord Shiva, cursed on account of murdering a Brahmin, is seducing the nude wives of the sages of the hermitage, who are looking at him with lust. The painter claims it is based on Shlokas written by Umapati Shivacharya.

Picture No 3: Krsna, Embodier of Eros (Krsna Murtimaniva Srngara): After Lord Shiva reduced Kaamdev to ashes, Lord Krishna assumes the role of Kaamdev. Lord Krishna is in erotic play with five nude Gopis. D Pereira claims this picture is inspired from Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda, and based on the art in the Padmapurana.

In reality, the paintings of Dr Jose Pereira are from his imagination; his perverse mindset misinterpreting the shlokas. Lord Krishna was just eight years old when he was in Gokul. The references given are just to misguide Hindus.

Instead of painting Hindu Deities in this way, why didn’t Dr Pereira paint Jesus Christ or Mother Mary in the nude? There are many examples of cruelty towards women in the Bible. Dr Pereira could have painted these pictures to make people aware about his own religion.

His action is intentional and with malice. In Goa, Christians and Hindus live in harmony. On account of Dr Pereira’s paintings, these relations can turn sour. Is not Dr Pereira inviting an unwanted issue?

Artists always boast about freedom. We all know that there is a provision in the Constitution for freedom of expression. It is not absolute, but coupled with the sense of responsibility, of not offending the sentiments of others. Through this letter, I hope we have clarified the misconceptions created in the minds of the readers and the damage done on account of this.

Girish Karnad withdraws from Goa GJCC due to Painter Jose Periera issue

August 19, 2010

Shravan Shuddha Dashami, Kaliyug Varsha 5112

Girish Karnad withdraws from the ‘Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee’ because Jose Pereira was not provided security for holding exhibition of his paintings

Panaji (Goa): A high level committee set up by the Goa Government to formulate the policy for the next 25 years had invited actor and director Girish Karnad to be its member but he has declined the offer. He has written a letter to Mr. Digambar Kamat, the Chief Minister of Goa informing about his decision to opt out of the said committee. He has given the reason for his decision as Goa Government’s not providing security to the exhibition of paintings by Dr. Jose Pereira. (What kind of policy will be formed by those who support artists drawing denigrating pictures of Deities? In fact, it is good for the virtuous people of Goa that such member has withdrawn from the committee. The image of Goa is already tarnished in the world for promoting drugs, gambling, liquor and sex. The website of Tourism Department is sending wrong image of Goa to the world. If there are any other members in the high level committee who promote immoral things, the Chief Minister should personally look into the matter and remove such members ! – Editor SP)

The Committee has been set up by the Chief Minister (CM) Digambar Kamat on the occasion of golden jubilee year of liberation of Goa under the Chairmanship of scientist Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar. Karnad was invited by the CM to join the committee but he declined the offer. In his letter, Karnad has said, “I have been shocked to see that some self-proclaimed protectors of Hindu culture attacked the exhibition of paintings by scholarly artist Pereira. (Hindus had protested against the obscene pictures of Hindu Deities drawn by Pereira in a very peaceful and lawful manner and there was no attack or anything of the sort. If Karnad had wrong information in the matter, he should have verified from those devout Hindus who protested against the exhibition. No cultured citizen of Goa would tolerate such mockery and there is nothing to get a shock. – Editor SP)

Some private vigilant groups are allowed to take law in their hands and the State Government is watching silently. I was scared to hear that police refused to provide security for the exhibition of Pereira’s paintings. (On receiving complaints from Hindus, police had instructed Pereira to withdraw the exhibition; so, there was no question of providing security as the exhibition was closed down. – Editor SP) I do not expect such culture in free atmosphere and am withdrawing from the committee, wrote Karnad. (Does Karnad expect that under the name of ‘Modern Art’, the exhibition of indecent paintings of Hindu Deities should be seen by cultured Goa citizens with their family members? Is this the culture expected by Karnad in free atmosphere? – Editor SP)

Hindus from Goa enarged as Karnad has made baseless accusations without verifying the facts

Dr. Jose Pereira had drawn nude, indecent and hideous pictures of Bhagavan Sree Krushna and Shiva. He had also held exhibition of paintings at Parvari involving mockery of other Hindu Deities; therefore, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) which represents devout religious Hindus, had lodged a complaint with Parvari Police Station. Devout Hindus had protested against such paintings. Dr. Pereira and the organizers had to wind up the exhibition despite police providing security taking into account the discontent generated among the people. Hindus are enraged as Karnad is making accusations against Hindu organizations without seeing the controversial pictures, without getting information on lawful opposition of Hindus; but by just relying only on one-sided news published in the newspapers.

One advocate from the city met the representative of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’ and said that would Karnad tolerate if his and his family members nude pictures were exhibited on the road? Would he tolerate it as freedom of expression? He has no respect and love towards Hindu Deities and therefore, he has become insensitive. Karnad should say what values would be inculcated in small children by Dr. Pereira’s paintings and what culture is going to be protected. (Such sensitive advocates are the true strength of Hindu Dharma ! – Editor SP)

While justifying the pictures drawn by the anti-Hindu Christian artist, Dr. Jose Pereira, Dr. Subodh Kerkar had said, “One needs a different kind of ‘vision’ to see the pictures and if such vision is lacking in members of Sanatan, they should get their eyes checked.” Sanatan has created pictures of Deities on the basis of Spiritual Science; therefore, the purity in such pictures is immediately noticed by the devotees. Picture of Sree Krushna drawn by anti-Hindu painter and the one created by Sanatan is given above. Readers can see both the pictures and decide what do they feel on seeing both the pictures. They can find out as to who has the impure mind as also convey their views to Dr. Kerkar at the following address.

Goa: 3 controversial paintings withdrawn from exhibition after protest by HJS

July 27, 2010

Ashadh Shuddha Dwitiya, Kaliyug Varsha 5112

Panaji (Goa): Three controversial paintings of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva were withdrawn from an exhibition here today following protests. Police Inspector Devendra Gad told PTI that paintings from an exhibition were withdrawn by Xavier Research Institute at Porvorim, near here, after protests by a group.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a Hindu organisation, had objected to the paintings by Dr Jose Pereira, which had shown Hindu deities in nude. "We went to the exhibition hall immediately after receiving the complaint. The organisers told us that they have withdrawn the paintings as they don't want any communal discord in the state, Gad said.

HJS spokesman Nilkant Chodankar had lodged a complaint with Porvorim police demanding immediate withdrawal of painting and action against the artist. Chodankar said that they have also written to chief minister Digamber Kamat, Home Minister Ravi Naik and Director General of Police B S Bassi about these paintings. HJS, a Hindu organisation, earlier had launched a campaign against painter M F Hussain and Goa-based installation artist Subodh Kerkar for their artworks depicting Hindu deities in bad light. Kerkar had depicted Lord Ganesha in a different form ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi festival last year.

HJS will protest by constitutional means if this exhibition hurting the Religious sentiments of Hindus is not withdrawn immediately! – Mr. Niranjan Chodankar, HJS, Goa

Dr. Jose Pereira has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by drawing nude, obscene and blasphemous pictures of Hindu deities Shiva and Krushna. He has committed this act intentionally with an evil objective of insulting Hindus. He should have assessed the fact whether he is denigrating the seat of worship of followers of another religion before drawing Hindu deities in such a manner. Hindus and Christians are living amicably in Goa. However, this act of Dr. Pereira can strain their relation. Thus, Dr. Pereira should withdraw this exhibition immediately; else there will be a strong protest by constitutional means.
