Telangana : Shortage of grass for fodder, Farmers sell animals to slaughter houses

The farmers of Telangana State are selling their animals in animal markets and Slaughterhouses. The Oxes and Buffalos are moving to slaughterhouses in huge numbers. The farmers who take care of their animals as their own children, are now an extra burden to them. As the draught situation is severe in Telangana State, it has become very difficult to secure grass for livestock. At one side the crops are drying due to severe water shortage and on the other side, the livestock which depends upon the farmers also suffering without food. The farmers are unable to face the situation and are selling their livestock to slaughterhouses at very low price. The farmers of Telangana are selling their animals to reduce their loan burden.

In villages of Telangana State, due to low rainfall, the grass for livestock is in shortage. The farmers that breed animals as an alternative to their agricultural income, are now unable to graze them. Hence, they are sending livestock to slaughter houses.

In Mahabubnagar, Medak, Nizambad, Rangareddy and Karimnagar Districts the situation is at alarming stage. As per the primary information, in the last month in Mahabubnagar and Medak District alone 5.5 lakhs of livestock has been sold. In Nizamabad District a lakh of animals were sold. In Mahabubnagar District, as many animals as in Devarakadra, Jadcharla, Gadwal, Narayanpet, Achampet, Kothakota and Makthal areas’ weekly market are being sold. In Medak District at Jogipet, Shankarampet, Jaheerabad, Papannapet, Narayankhed Talukas the situation is also severe. From the neighbouring Karnataka State border of Borgi, Katkal, Tegalvadi villages of Kangvi Mandal, the animals are being transported to Nizam Sagar project area of Nizamabad District. Some people selling their livestock at lesser price as they are unable to transport the animals to Nizamabad District. The Oxes and Buffalos are continuously increasing in Satapur animal market in Nizamabad District. The situation of the farmers in Husnabad division of KarimNagar is also pathetic. The farmers are saying that to clear loan amounts they are selling animals for their livelihood. The shortage of grass in Shankarpalli, Nacharam, Yalal areas of Rangareddy District is also severe. Some farmers are purchasing grass from distant areas and feeding their animals and some farmers are unable to do so and selling buffaloes to slaughter houses.
