Govt is unlikely to go for a country-wide ban on cow slaughter despite strong demands for it from its MPs and other saffron outfits.

BJP-led NDA government is unlikely to go for a country-wide ban on cow slaughter despite strong demands for it from its MPs and other saffron outfits. According to Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, the government would prefer “effective” protection for cows, instead of imposing a ban on killing them.

“If your mother is in danger, instead of asking the attackers not to kill her, it is always good to protect her effectively and properly. The ministry has a series of programmes for it,” the minister said.

During the Budget session, a number of MPs, especially from Uttar Pradesh, have asked the government to impose a ban on cow slaughter.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has been demanding a complete ban on cow slaughter.

“It is something that the BJP has promised. There should be a complete ban on cow slaughter, not only because of the religious reasons, but also because it is good for the agriculture sector and for maintaining an environmental balance,” said Vinod Bansal, VHP’s Delhi-based media in charge.

However, he said VHP was ready to give more time to the government to “fulfill its promise”.

During his 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attacked then Congress-led UPA government for what he called “Pink Revolution” promoting slaughter-houses and the export of meat through subsidies and tax breaks.
