STARTLING TRUTH: About 391 pieces of bones were recovered on Saturday in a hospital in Ratlam, MP.

New Delhi: A day after the remains of newborns and fetuses were found at a missionary hospital in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, more bones were dug out from the vicinity on Sunday.

About 391 pieces of bones were recovered on Saturday following a tip-off from a pit near the Ratlam Christian hospital.

The superintendent of the Ratlam Christian hospital has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Remains of unborn babies and fetuses were also found from the pit. The samples have been sent for forensic tests to Bhopal.

One other person working as part of the sanitation staff has also been arrested. Hospital authorities are describing it as bio-medical waste.

DIG of Ratlam Varun Kapoor said, “The bones have been sent to Bhopal Medico-legal Institute for examination.”

Gynecologist of the hospital Venu Gopalan was also detained for questioning in connection with the recovery of pieces of bones of three to four newborns and fetuses.

Claiming that burying bodies in hospital premises was against the law, Kapoor said the area in the search would be widened if the need arose.

Samples of bones were sent to the State Medico-legal Institute in Bhopal and a committee, comprising doctors and environment experts, has started a probe. The future course of action will be decided after the panel submits its report, he said.

Illegal abortions, foeticide, infanticide or sex determination were not carried out in any of the hospitals operated by the CNI, its chief functionary Samuel Kishan told PTI.

The hospital in Ratlam is more than 100 years old and such activities are not allowed on its premises, he claimed.

"We will cooperate with the police probe and if anybody is at fault, appropriate action will be taken," PTI quoted Kishan saying.
