In many districts in Karnataka, Hindu Janajagaruti Samiti (HJS) undertook a drive against celebration of ‘Valentine’s Day’ considering its after effects on society

About 40,000 handbills enlightening on the subject were distributed near schools, colleges, religious institutions, organizations and at other public places in all districts. Lectures were organized in about 20 colleges for students. ‘Flex’ hoardings were displayed at public places. Articles were published in different, about 15, news papers on the topic. Press conferences were held at Mangaluru and Chikkmangalur. The handbills and clippings of guidance given to students were telecast on U channel in Udupi. In some colleges HJS handbills were put up on the notice-boards.

Opposition

1. Belur Opposition by Muslim youth; news about which has been published in DSP dated 16.2.2011

2. Police opposed display of hoardings at Manavi, Raichur; but after checking the permission letter from the concerned office, they allowed to display the boards.

3.  The Principal of one college had granted permission for distribution of the handbills; but its security guard took objection. He was not allowing despite informing him that the Principal had extended permission. It was learnt that one professor had asked him to not allow distribution of any handbill; therefore, only when he came out and told him, the security guard allowed HJS activists to distribute the handbills.

Response at other places

At Hassan, members of All India Students Federation asked for the handbills and distributed them in schools and colleges. Few auto-rickshaw drivers got copies of the handbills enlarged for display on the back of their vehicles.

The Principals and professors from all colleges welcomed this drive and they felt that the HJS drive was quite commendable and such kind of enlightenment was necessary in the society.

Kunigal, Tumkur District, Karnataka: At Swami College, students were given guidance for 10 minutes in 7 classes besides distribution of handbills about ill effects of celebration of Valentine’s Day. Even before the start of such guidance, barring one class, all other students showed their readiness to not celebrate Valentine’s Day. Students from one class, however, first said that they would celebrate Valentine’s Day and after the guidance and reading the handbill, they agreed not to celebrate this Day. Many students said, ‘What you are saying is right. Followers of other religions never follow any customs from our Dharma, why should we follow their customs?’ They firmly said that they would not celebrate this Day.

Since the time that HJS activists sought permission of the Principal of Swami College till the lectures were conducted, he extended all the support.

Some students suggested HJS members to approach sellers of Valentine’s Day bands, greeting cards etc. and explain to them about this day and how they were causing harm to young generation for little financial gains. Some shopkeepers said that they had already bought such material but they would keep a copy of the handbill while selling the greetings cards.

Handbills were distributed in 3 colleges in Bangalore; but the reactions of the students were not very positive. Only few students read the handbill and others either threw it down or tore it off. The students from all other districts, however, reacted in positive manner. Students from Gadag-Halyal said that following ‘Valentine’s Day’ was like committing a sin. Most of the students agreed to not celebrate Valentine’s Day.

We can say that overall, most of the people do not like immoral behavior and other things taking place under the name of Valentine’s Day; but everybody keeps quiet because of the influence of mass media and people with their so-called modern outlook. The need for HJS activists creating awareness among people and bringing in psychological revolution was felt very badly. Hindus, mainly youth, do not follow ‘Dharmacharan’ as per culture; but blindly follow western culture. It was, however, noted during this drive that when these youth members are made aware of such things, the latent patriotism in them, gets awakened. It was observed while undertaking this drive that one feels reassured that, with little more expansive enlightenment, this young generation will protect the one and only great Indian culture which takes one from Untruth to Truth , from darkness to light.
