Denigration of ‘Ramayana’; Strong opposition from HJS

Mumbai: A show of Hindi play titled ‘Ravanleela’ written by Kusum Kumar was staged at Matunga Mysore Association’s hall on 5th September at 8.00 p.m. In this play, there is denigration of every character in ‘Ramayana’ by giving them indecent dialogues. ‘Ravana’ is the main character in this play. It is shown that he is not ready to die at the hands of Srirama because he has not been paid his remuneration; therefore, people throw eggs and tomatoes at him. (Those , who are indulging in such despicable denigration of the great characters in ‘Ramayana’, are ‘Dharma-drohis’ ! – Editor SP) The members of HJS viz. Mrs. Janhavi Bhadirke, Mr. Prasad Mankar and Mr. Narendra Surve contacted the producer, director Om Katare and the manager Madhusudan of the theatre as they came to know about the denigration and asked them for an explanation; but Katare claimed that there was no mockery in the play and gave evasive answers. The members of HJS then submitted a memorandum to the Matunga Police Station.

Members of HJS, Mr. Dinesh Kondavilkar of ‘Vajra Dal’ and workers and members of Bajarang Dal met Ashok Sharma and his colleagues related to the play; but they tried to tell the members that there was no denigration and claimed that they were also Hindus showing the members the ‘sacred thread’ worn by them. (One cannot become a Hindu just by wearing a ‘thread’. A person is not a Hindu only because he is a born Hindu; but his deeds should show that he is a Hindu. Hindus who are making mockery of Deities in such disgraceful manner are a blot on Hindu Dharma ! Why should Dharma i.e. God protect such ‘Dharma-drohis’? – Editor SP)  They also promised that the objectionable part would be omitted and if the agitating members thought that the whole play is a mockery, its shows would not be staged in future. They allowed 5 members to watch the play. After watching the play, they realised that the whole play was a mockery.

Few disgraceful dialogues from the play are given below.
Ravana: Katil Ramchandar, Kutte Kamine, Saale !
Sita (To Sri Ram): Mujhe Mrug laa do.
Sri Ram : Mujh par case ho jayega
(Lakshman and Sita hear somebody’s shouting. The following dialogues are said)
Sita: Go and help Ram.
Lakshman: I cannot go leaving you here.
Sita: You want to deceive your brother and kill him so that you can have me.

(One cannot be a Hindu if his blood does not boil after reading the above. Will the playwright dare to write such disgraceful dialogues about objects of worship of Muslims? Hindus are tolerant and therefore, anyone and everyone is throwing mud at their worshipped objects. How long are they going to tolerate such nonsense? – Editor SP)

The person enacting the role of Sita is very fat and is shown wearing a white saree. (By showing virtuous and chaste wife like Sita in this manner,  the playwright has created a path for him to Hell ! – Editor SP)

After the show was over, Director Om Katare refused to give in writing that shows of the play would not be staged in future and to render apology to Hindus. (Since the Congress Government is not ready to pass laws against denigration of revered objects of Hindus, the ‘Dharma-drohis’ have become impudent. Hindus should now take the Congress Government to task in lawful manner and compel them to enact the necessary laws ! – Editor SP)

Later, all members went to Matunga Police Station to lodge a complaint against the organisers but Police Inspector Koparde and Gaikwad did not take down their complaint. They told the members that they had no right to interfere when the play was passed by the Censor Board. (Would the police have similar outlook if the matter was related to Muslims? In such case, Muslims would have attacked the Police Station. Do the police feel that Hindus should take law in their hands like Muslims? – Editor SP) The members told the police to take down the complaint as their religious sentiments were hurt; still the police refused. All the while, the police were just acting as spectators. (Hindus should think whether to help such police when they are in danger during riots ! – Editor SP)

‘Mid Day’ has published the news about the play in its issue dated 26th August wherein a reference to Rama is made as ‘anti-virus’, Sita as obese and ‘underpaid’ Ravana. (Hindus must boycott ‘Mid day’ for stooping to such low level in referring to Hindus revered objects ! – Editor SP)
