Nobody has a right to hurt feelings of devotees by drawing denigrating pictures of Deities ! – Mr. Veerendra Marathe, Trustee, Sanatan Sanstha on Prudent channel

Panaji (Goa): There has to be a limit to art. Nobody has a right to hurt feelings of devotees by drawing perverted pictures of Deities. José Pereira has crossed all ethics through his pictures; therefore, Hindus are bound to oppose him. The lawful protest by Hindus against such exhibitions is proper thing to do. The above views were expressed by Mr. Veerendra Marathe, the Management Trustee of Sanatan Sanstha when he represented devout Hindus in the discussion program held on ‘Prudent’ channel. The topic of discussion was ‘Devate cha Apaman ki Kalecha Apaman (Insult of Deity or insult of Art)’. Maria Aurora Kuto, a writer and anti-Hindu painter Dr. Subodh Kerkar also took part in this discussion program. The program was hosted by Sandesh Prabhudesai, the Editor of the ‘Prudent’ media news channel. The other two participants as also the program host were in favour of freedom of expression of an artist; but Mr. Veerendra Marathe effectively explained how it was right for the devout Hindus to oppose paintings by José Pereira, M F Husain and Subodh Kerkar. Mr. Marathe showed the pictures drawn by José Pereira and said that the pictures were so indecent that people were bound to oppose.

Subodh Kerkar diverting from the topic of discussions accused that ‘you Sanatan people called me up and abused me over phone. You people have only drowned the ‘Gatha’ of Tukaram; you only harassed Dnayneshwar, the bullets in Gandhi’s body were also shot by you’ thus expressing his hatred towards Sanatan.

Maria Kuto said that nobody can insult Deities as the Deities are beyond all this. Mr. Veerendra Marathe agreed that Deities are beyond everything but such pictures hurt feelings of those who always worship and remember Shree Krushna and Shiva and other Deities.

Irrelevant talk during discussions

The topic of the discussion was denigration of Deities and freedom of expression of artist; but Subodh Kerkar and Sandesh Prabhudesai were diverting from the main topic. Subodh Kerkar accused that in ‘Dainik Sanatan Prabhat’, there is always matter against Christians and Muslims and tried to divert the topic. (In DSP, there are always facts about what is happening around us. Sanatan has never unnecessarily criticized Christians or Muslims ! – Editor SP) Mr. Veerendra Marathe pointed out at that point that the discussion was going off the track. The program host Sandesh Prabhudesai asked Mr. Marathe that Sanatan seekers create problems for the traffic in Karmal Ghats at Kankon as the seekers stop and worship a tree on this road because its roots look like trunk of Sree Ganesha.

Snippets

1. Whenever Subodh Kerakar was unable to argue his point, Sandesh Prabhudesai was helping him.

2. The other two participants were not letting Mr. Marathe express his point on instigating writing in DSP. Mr. Marathe, therefore, boldly pointed out that it was an example of how the ordinary people were not allowed to express their views by the pressure tactics used by eminent persons.

3. While arguing against the point raised by Pereira that ‘Kamdev awakened the sexual feelings of gopis by coming in the form of Sree Krushna, Mr. Marathe referred to the book by Sanatan on ‘Raasleela’; but Pereira said that it was Sanatan’s book and he did not want anything to do with that book.

4. Nobody seemed to be interested in knowing what the objection about the paintings was.
