Mumbai:Dr. Deepak Sawant, a Shiv Sena MLA informed in the Legislative Council session that National Educational Research and Training Institute (NCERT) established in 1961 has been imparting misguiding training through the medium of books published by it that can lead to misconceptions about ‘Bharatmata’ and can create problems and demanded that the State Government should put a curb on the management of NCERT.

In the discussions started by Opposition parties on education, he said, "In this State including Mumbai, many CBSE schools are being opened. In South Mumbai, there are 28 schools opened with CBSE course, in North Mumbai, there are 22, in Western zone 27 whereas in Thane district, there are 19 and in Raigad, 13 such schools have been opened. It is necessary to impart training in Marathi but that is not being done. In South India, it is compulsory to learn local languages and same policy should be adopted even here."

"In these schools, a book published by NCERT viz "India and contemporary world – 2" is being taught. The curriculum is applicable even to Maharashtra. In this book, there are 2 pictures of ‘Bharatmata’ drawn by Tagore under which there is a note that "See these pictures and write your opinion whether these pictures would be liked by all castes, creeds and followers of various religions in India". Students are misguided on their feelings towards ‘Bharatmata’ creating problems. The State Government should, therefore, put a curb on the Institute. Books published by it should be checked before including in curriculum. These schools are charging enormous fees."

‘NCERT text books create wrong impressions on children’

April 19, 2008

Chaitra Shuddha Chaturdashi
Mumbai: “Wrong and bad impressions are being created on the students through the history text book of National Center for educational Research and Training (NCERT) like distorting the original history, using Hindu deities for advertisements, putting before the students the picture that the Muslim society is backward etc.”, charged Dr. Deepak Sawant, MLC of Shiv Sena in legislative council raising a point of order. He asked the government to come out with a statement on the issue.

He said that a lesson has been incorporated in NCERT’s text book of standard 8 which states how the tribals have been displaced due to huge developmental projects and how the Muslim society was displaced and neglected during the journey of half a century of the independent Bharat. A pathetic picture of Muslim society has been drawn in the lesson. Just as the political parties propagate how a particular society has remained away from the mainstream and development, the NCERT has also included similar lessons about the Muslim society. What impression does NCERT want to create on the young minds of children? A number of unwanted subjects have been incorporated in the book.” He further said, “In one of the NCERT books being taught in Goa, Mahatma Gandhi has been referred to in a singular and disrespectful manner.

On the issue of NCERT goof-up, a delegation of HJS had visited Dr. Deepak Sawant; Shri Pandurang Phundkar, opposition leader in legislative council; Shri Eknath Khadse, group-leader of BJP and Shri Subhash Desai, leader of Shivsena, in the last week, presented a representation and requested them to raise the issue during legislative session. In keeping with his assurance, Dr. Deepak Sawant had raised the issue in the council for which HJS thanked him profusely.
