Kind Attn.Ms.Kalpna Shah,

Dear Sir/Madam,

Subject:
Protest against holding exhibitions/sale/screening of film related to  MF Husain’s paintings at Tao Art Gallery from  6th to 26th Aug 2010.

This refers to news published in Indo-Asian News Service, New Delhi on 22.07.2010 stating that at a time “M.F.Husain lives in self-imposed exile from India, his son Owais Husain has followed his foot steps and bringing out a solo show at Tao art gallery. In this news Ms.Kalpana Shah’s statements are also published.

Previously we had written to you protest letters on 20th August 2007 and 23rd October 2007 to cancel exhibition and sale of M.F.Husain’s paintings. Accordingly you had removed the paintings from exhibition on 20th August 2007 and canceled Husain’s paintings in exhibition dated 25th October 2007. As per your letter dated 23rd October 2007 you had assured that M.F.Husain’s paintings will not be displayed in Tao Art Gallery. Accordingly we had respected and thanked your gesture. However we are perturbed to know the news regarding exhibition of paintings, film show referring and glorifying M.F.Husain.

We want again to bring to your notice that MF Husain has hurt the Religious and National sentiments of crores of Hindus and Indians through his paintings by painting the Hindu deities and Bharat Mata in the nude and obscene. This has resulted in promoting enmity between different religious groups and disturbing National integrity. He has been accused of committing offences under section 2 of the prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. The court cases are still pending.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is registered NGO doing social, religious and National welfare work. Devoted Hindus doing voluntary charitable work have formed Samiti. Samiti is active throughout India and educating people about Dharma in scientific way, campaigning against malpractices done under religious practices and solving problems connected with National, Religious and social field. We object to the exhibition and sale of any of his paintings or glorification of such an “Anti – National” and “Anti – Hindu” individual.

We are approaching you in a very legitimate manner and expect your complete co-operation in this regard or there will be a peaceful protest by all the Nationalist and Hindu groups against your company.

In future you are requested to refrain from any exhibitions and sale of any paintings of M.F.Husain.

Yours Truly,

S.G. Vatkar,

Coordinator, Mumbai Region.

Your Ref. Letter dated 28 July 2010 regarding protest against holding exhibitions/sale/screening of film related to MF Husain’s paintings at Tao Art Gallery

Dr. Mr. Vatkar,

This is the reply to your above mentioned letter received on 28th July 2010 at Tao Art Gallery.

Please note that you have been misinformed in relation to the show by Owais Husain scheduled to be held in August 2010. Owais Husain is an independent artist who paints, writes and makes music and film of very good repute whose work, themes, topics and details are independent of M F Husain.

The specific show to be held at Tao Art Gallery, which reserves the rights to exhibit the art in its private space, is of totally a non-controversial nature.

I thank you for your letter, and hope that this clarification removes any doubt in your mind as to the intent, content, theme and details of the exhibition by Owais Husain at Tao Art Gallery

Yours sincerely,
Rajan Pendharkar
