Malaysia will charge protestors who indulged in an act hurtful to the sentiments of the Hindu community in the controversial demonstration against the relocation of a century-old temple in a Muslim majority neighbourhood. The demonstrators will be charged with sedition and illegal assembly.

A group of fanatic people residents of the Shah Alam suburb in Selangor state marched to the secretariat building to protest against the temple relocation on August 28 and indulged in an act hurting the sentiments of the minority Hindu community.

Attorney General Abdul Gani said the police had personally submitted the investigation papers to him on Monday, and ‘I am satisfied the demonstrators should be taken to court’.

Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan said the police were serious about taking action against protesters who offended the people of other faiths and will push for ‘deterrent sentences’. ‘We will not tolerate such incidents that can spark racial tension,’ he said.

On August 28, some 50 people marched to the gates of the state secretariat building to protest against the relocation of the 100-year-old Sri Mahamariamman temple. They warned of further action if the temple was built in their area, local media reports said. The manner of the protest drew criticism from various parties for insulting religious sensitivities.

Last week, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said he would leave it to the attorney general to determine if there were any violations of the law when the residents staged the protest.

In an immediate response to the attorney general’s decision, Hindu Sangam adviser A Vaithilingam said: "The move to charge the culprits is a good step."

Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George said the decision to prosecute would help ease the hurt felt by the Hindu community while chairman of the action committee for the August 28 protest, Mahayuddin Manaf, said he respected the decision to prosecute those responsible.

Malaysian Indian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry president K K Eswaran said: "This is a stern reminder that the government does not condone actions which disrupt harmony among the various races in the country."

The Malaysian Chinese Association NGO Liaison Bureau welcomed the decision to charge the protesters saying the incident went against the Malaysian political culture of consensus building in a legal and peaceful manner. Bureau chairman Ti Lian Ker said in a statement: ‘Of late, we have seen Malaysians developing a tendency to resort to mob antics and violence to express themselves. "This trend of violence in whatever name must be stopped and there should no justification given. An offence is still an offence.’

Muslim group says too many Hindu temples making Malays uneasy

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia): An fanatic missionary organization added fuel to the Shah Alam temple row today by concluding that the root cause of the controversy was that there are too many Hindu temples in Malaysia.

Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) president Datuk Mohd. Nakhaie Ahmad said today that Muslims could accept the right of non-Muslims to build their own houses of worship, but the problem was the proliferation of illegal Hindu temples.

He also argued that it was the responsibility of non-Muslims to take care of the sensitivities of Muslims.

He said that Yadim had come out with a research case study to back the opposition to the construction of the Sri Mahamariamman temple in the Section 23 neighbourhood of Shah Alam, in an apparent justification of last week’s cow-head protests by a group claiming to be residents there.

Nakhaie told reporters that the case study had been done to examine the sensitivities of Muslims towards the building of temples/ places of worship of non-Muslims.

“The number of mosques compared to Hindu temples are not at all balanced with the ratio of people who live in a particular area. There are approximately 2600 Hindus living in Sentul and there are also 72 temples there," he said, citing Yadim’s research of a Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood.

Muslims make up the majority of residents in Sentul at around 60 per cent of the population, he said, but there were only 13 mosques in the area.

According to him, the Muslim level of tolerance in the country was “quite high”.

“Muslims are fine if temples are built but there has to be some limit. They cannot accept it if temples were to be built in Malay-Muslim majority areas. There will be some level of uneasiness if the temple activities disrupt the harmony of Muslims,” proclaimed the Yadim chief.

He added that what happened in Section 23 “was expected” because the sensitivities of the Malay-Muslims were not taken into account by the Selangor state government.

He also blamed ‘certain’ parties for politicising the issue, stating that based on statements made by politicians, there was a tendency for the public to blame the residents of Section 23 for being racist.

“Whatever that has happened is simply the reaction of Malays towards the aggressive moves of building an illegal temple in the area.

"They are disappointed with the Selangor state government. The reason this has escalated to such a level is due to the negligence of the state to act swiftly and promptly on the matter,” lamented Nakhaie.

Nakhaie urged local governments to take action on the proliferation of illegal temples, emphasising religion should not be used for political gain by some parties.

When asked on what should be done to handle the current crisis in Section 23, he said that tolerance is the answer and that non-Muslims should take care of the sensitivities of Muslims.

“Back in the time of pre-independence, past leaders like Tan Cheng Lock understood their position in this country. Non-Muslims did not arrive on an empty piece of land in Malaysia. Malays and Malay Kings were already here for centuries.

"The past leaders understood that in order to be a part of this country, they had to respect the rights and sensitivities of the Malays, and they did just that. Sadly today this agreement is lost,” he said.

Nakhaie also lambasted Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders like Shah Alam MP Datuk Khalid Samad as well as state executive councillor Datuk Rodziah Ismail, calling them hypocrites for wanting legal action to be taken against the protestors.

“These people who wanted the ISA abolished suddenly have no qualms in wanting it to be used against Section 23 residents,” said Nakhaie.

Last Friday a group claiming to be Muslim residents of Section 23 in Shah Alam, the new site of the Hindu temple, held a demonstration outside the Selangor State Secretariat by dragging a severed cow-head, a sacred animal in Hinduism, which they stomped on and spat at in the presence of riot police.

The police did not take any action.

The act was carried out by a group of 50 protestors who oppose the relocation of the Sri Mahamariamman Temple to Section 23 from Section 19, claiming that the housing area is predominantly Muslim.

A check last week has since shown that the neighbourhood is multi-racial, with Indians making up more than a quarter of those who live there.

The 150-year old temple was built on a plantation which over the years was developed into housing areas by the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS). No provisions were previously made to relocate the temple, which currently stands in a Muslim-majority area.

Muslims protest with butchered Cow head against Hindu temple

Shah Alam (Malaysia):  A group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 have threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple.

Amid chants of "Allahuakbar," the group also left the severed head of a cow at the entrance of the State Secretariat here as a warning to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim. The "residents" said that the construction of a Hindu temple in a 90 per cent Malay- Muslim neighbourhood was insensitive because activities there would disrupt their lives.

They claimed that the "noise" from the temple would disturb their own praying, and that they would not be able to function properly as Muslims.

The group of 50 over protestors marched shortly after Friday prayers from the Shah Alam State mosque to the State Secretariat.

“I challenge YB Khalid, YB Rodziah and Xavier Jeyakumar to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension will happen if this goes on, and the state will be held responsible,” shouted Ibrahim Haji Sabri amid strong chants of “Allahu Akbar!”

Ibrahim identified himself as the Deputy Chairman of the Resident’s Committee against the building of the temple in S23 here, which is perceived by some as being a Muslim majority area.

He told the press that the state should move the temple to Section 22 as ‘originally planned’, and also labelled Khalid a “traitor to the Malay race and Islam”.

It is understood that the protest is an immediate reaction towards the Selangor MB’s visit to the Hindu temple site yesterday, an act seen by the "residents" as disrespectful to the Muslims of the community.

Mohd. Zurit Bin Ramli, who claims to be the secretary of the "Coalition of Malaysian NGOs" echoed Ibrahim’s stand on the matter, saying that it was irresponsible on the part of the state government to approve the construction as there was apparently a “90 per cent” majority Muslim population in Section 23.

“With a temple on our residential area, we cannot function properly as Muslims. The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers in the Surau. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple,” stated Zurit.

When asked whether members of the protest were affiliated with any organisations or movements, Ibrahim claimed that the people present today were members of PAS, PKR as well as Umno who are “united in the name of Islam and the Malay spirit.”

The state government was also accused of lying to the people of Selangor.

The Chairman of the Residents Committee, Mahyuddin Manaf excitedly proclaimed that the committee would uncover “the lies” and find proof of the state’s misconduct.

“Khalid Ibrahim wears a mask of a Muslim, but in truth he is a liberal. PAS stands to lose out as a result. I voted for PAS as well as Khalid in the past elections,” Mahyuddin claimed.

The issue first cropped up when the Selangor government proposed that the Sri Mariamman temple be relocated from Section 19 to Section 23.
