Even as Rang Rasiya released in theatres all over, a Kerala court stayed the release of the film in the state. The interim stay order was issued by a court in Alapuzha district on a complaint by Indiradevi Kunjama, a relative of the 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma, on whose life the film is based. The makers were asked to add a disclaimer that the film has no connection with the personal life of Varma.

 No screening

A special screening of PK may not be held for Sanjay Dutt in jail. It was Aamir Khan’s wish to show the film to Dutt, who plays Aamir’s friend Bhairo Singh. Apparently the Maharashtra Police’s prison department has rejected Khan’s request of holding a screening for Sanjay in the Yerwada prison, where he is currently serving a sentence. The authorities want to treat all the prisoners equally and don’t want to show preferential treatment towards the actor who is convicted for illegal possession of arms in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Ban the film ‘Rang Rasiya’ which maligns character of Raja Ravi Varma : HJS

October 22, 2014

Raja Ravi Varma was in the forefront among the renowned artists in Bharat in pre-Independence era. Though he was from a royal family his pictures were not only masterpieces but he had the rare talent of drawing beautiful pictures of Deities on Puranic topics which arouse spiritual emotion in the people. His several pictures provide immense inspiration to today’s students and the society. However, with the intention of making quick money in his name, instead of glorifying such artists, a film producer produced a film called ‘Rang Rasiya’ which not only maligns the noble character of Raja Ravi Varma but also contains imaginary incidents. The film directed by Ketan Mehta not only indulges in character assassination of Raja Ravi Verma but it also has the potential to malign the people’s perspective towards him. The great artist’s descendant Shri. Rama Varma has strongly opposed the film. The film is being released on 23rd October throughout Bharat. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has also strongly opposed the film. The Samiti is in correspondence with the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board). The Samiti has demanded that the film be banned forthwith.

Raja Ravi Varma was from a royal family. He also protected the sanctity of art. However, in several scenes in the film he is shown making obscene gesticulations with women in the film and his character is depicted as a dude artist taking undue interest in women. The family of Shri. Rama Varma had allowed use of their palace called ‘Kalimannur Palace’ for shooting some part of the film. However, in reality the shooting was used in the film in an inappropriate manner. Shri. Varma and his family members were shocked to see the film. Several incidents of Raja Ravi Varma were shown piece-meal after shooting them wrongly. If such a film is shown in the society, the new generation of artists in Bharat will be adversely affected. Since the film indulges in total character assassination of Raja Ravi Varma, the Samiti demands the film may be banned forthwith.

One fails to understand how the BJP Government, which is wedded to protect the freedom of art, has allowed persons from film industry with commercial intent to insult the great artist. The Censor Board has been persistently passing films which are obscene and anti-Hindu. The rampant corruption taking place in the Censor Board was also laid bare recently. Therefore, the BJP Government is answerable why the Censor Board is not yet dissolved.
