Kerala : The police have arrested a young Catholic woman studying for nunhood on charges of attempt to murder after she allegedly tried to set her colleague on fire.

The police said Sunday the incident was reported from St Ann’s Convent at North Paravur near Kochi. The arrested woman, Raichal, 24, had joined her Catholic congregation six years back. She was in the final stage of attaining nunhood, said the police.

They said Raichal was staying with two other novices at the convent and “was attracted” to one of them. After the convent superiors came to know about Raichal’s relationship with the inmate, they decided to transfer the novices to different places.

The victim was slated to leave for a convent in Andhra Pradesh Monday and Raichal was not happy about being separated from the victim.

Raichal sprayed kerosene on her friend while she was sleeping in the early hours of Sunday. The victim suffered 40 per cent of burns, mostly on upper parts of the body. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Raichal.
