Congress MLA files FIR against Rumi Nath

July 07, 2012

Guwahati (Assam) : A Congress legislator in Assam today filed an FIR against party MLA Rumi Nath alleging that she along with her second husband had illegally entered his residence and beat up visitors suspecting them to be involved in the attack on the couple last week.

Police said the FIR was filed after Congress MLA Kamalakhya Purkayastha from North Karimganj constituency faxed the complaint to the Dispur police station today.

Purkayastha alleged that Nath, her second husband Jacky Jakir and two of her escorts forcibly entered his (Purkayastha's) official quarter at Dispur capital complex late last night and beat up at least four of his visitors and a caretaker.

Purkayastha, who was not present in the quarter during the incident as he was in his constituency, further charged that Nath attacked his visitors doubting that they were "involved in the attack on Nath and her husband" in a Karimganj hotel last week.

Police sources said investigations are on. Nath, who represents the Borkhola assembly constituency in Barak Valley, had created a furore by announcing her marriage with Jakir without divorcing her first husband.

Nath and Jakir were beaten up and injured by a mob at Karimganj town on June 29 night.

Assam MLA Rumee Nath and her Muslim husband attacked for converting to Islam

June 30, 2012

Guwahati (Assam) : A woman Congress legislator from Assam was thrashed by a mob at a hotel in Karimganj town late Friday night after she converted to Islam and married a Muslim friend, police said Saturday.

Rumi Nath and her husband Jacky Jakir, who were badly injured, were being shifted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital Saturday for treatment, police said.

Sources close to the legislator said she was pregnant.

Nath, who had won the Borkhola assembly seat in Assam's Barak Valley on a BJP ticket in 2006, had defected later and joined the Congress. She contested the 2011 assembly elections on a Congress ticket and retained the seat.

She married her friend and long time family acquaintance Jacky Jakir, a Muslim by faith, last month and it angered most of her supporters. She also converted to Islam before the marriage. She, however, did not divorce her first husband, Rakesh Kumar Singh and left the daughter from her first marriage in her parents' house.

After she revealed her second marriage, some of her supporters and social organisations in the Barak Valley warned her not to enter the area. The MLA had been out of the state with her second husband since then.

"The couple came to Karimganj last evening and were staying for the night at the Hotel Nakshatra. Angry residents somehow came to about the presence of Rumi Nath and her second husband and physically assaulted the duo. Although she had body guards and police reached the spot immediately, it became difficult to control the huge mob," Karimganj Superintendent of Police Pradip Pujari told IANS.

"While we were able to rescue both of them, they have been seriously injured. Both the MLA and her husband Jacky Jakir are being shifted to Guwahati for better treatment Saturday morning," Pujari said.

Nath, eloped with Zakir leaving her two-year-old daughter and husband in the lurch. Rumee, who represents the Barkhola assembly segment, converted to Islam and married her long-time Facebook friend Zakir about a month ago in Islamic way. On Friday, she circulated a video to the media disclosing that state minister Siddeque Ahmed “facilitated” the marriage.

Her husband Rakesh Singh has reportedly petitioned chief minister Tarun Gogoi against the minister. Singh earlier filed an FIR with the police reporting ‘abduction’ of his wife. Nath switched over to the Congress from the BJP following her expulsion for cross-voting in a Rajya Sabha election a couple of years ago.

Love Jihad : Married Assam MLA converts to Islam, marries her Facebook friend

May 27, 2012

Guwahati (Assam) : An Assam MLA, who is married and has a two-year-old daughter, has been reported missing ever since she eloped with a youth on Tuesday.

Reports doing the rounds say that Rumee Nath, 32, sneaked into Bangladesh along with her second husband Jacky Zakir, a government employee, even as the police are searching for them.

Rumee, who represents the Barkhola assembly segment, converted to Islam and married her long-time Facebook friend Zakir about a month ago in Islamic way.

When her wedding photographs were flashed on local TV channels, she rubbished them as ‘doctored’. However, she admitted to her second marriage after eloping with Zakir on Tuesday.

“Zakir is my legal husband and henceforth, I have no relation with Rakesh Singh. I will soon file for divorce,” Rumee told the media. She said she did not admit to her second marriage earlier owing to ‘political pressures’.

“I converted to Islam before my second marriage and at my own volition. Therefore, the Hindu marriage laws won’t be applicable to me,” she said adding that she would claim the custody of her daughter.

An advocate of the Gauhati High Court said the MLA’s claim would hold little ground. “Her claim that she got converted to Islam and therefore, seeking divorce from her husband was not binding on her before second marriage holds little ground,” the advocate said and added, “She could be charged with polygamy and sentenced to seven years in jail.”

Rumee switched over to the Congress from the BJP following her expulsion for cross-voting in a Rajya Sabha election a couple of years ago.
