Panaji (Goa): The State of Goa is known for its ancient and magnificent temples, but the temples in Goa are still being attacked post-independence. In order to curb such attacks and save temples, trustees of various temples of Goa are going to unite and establish the ‘Gomantak Mandir and Dhaarmik Sanstha Mahasangh’. In this context, a big programme has been organized in Sri Sant Gadge Maharaj Hall at Porvorim on 8th January at 4.00 pm. This information was given by Mahasangh in a press conference held here today.
Mr. Chandrakant alias Bhai Pandit, Chairman of Sree Ganesh Temple, Mapusa and Chairman of Ad-hoc committee of Mahasangh; Mr. Rajkumar desai, Chairman of Sree Nilkant Brahmeshwar Temple, Porvorim and Vice- Chairman of Mahasangh; Mr. Jayesh Thali, Convener of Mahasangh;  Mr. Ramesh Shinde, spokesperson of HJS of Goa, Maharastra and Gujrat states; Mr. Mahabaleswara Chibade, Sree Mahahaya Kalika Temple, Bhicholim; Mr. Shivprasad Joshi, temple priest of Sree Mulveer temple, Pednem and Mr. Arjun Naik, of Sree Damodar Temple, Margao were present at this time.

Mr. Ramesh Shinde briefed those present about the objectives of the Mahasangh. Temples in Goa are being attacked continually. In the past 6 years, more than 50 idols of 35 temples have been desecrated. Likewise, more than 250 temples have been looted. Inspite of such attacks still taking place, the government has shown apathy towards this grave issue. The government has not worked out any effective solution to stop the attacks on temples. On the contrary, the government is trying to label temples and small shrines as unauthorized religious structures and demolish them by citing a Supreme Court ruling. It is the need of the hour to unite temple trustees and save the temples from such attacks. Thus, temple trustees of various temples of Goa have come together to establish the ‘Gomantak Mandir and Dhaarmik Sanstha Mahasangh’.

The main objectives of the Mahasangh are as follows –
1. Maintaining co-ordination among temples and religious organizations.
2. To provide free-of-cost legal assistance to temple committees to resolve legal matters.
3. To impart Dharmashikshan (religious education) to the youth; to propagate the philosophy of Sanatan Dharma
4. To provide guidance for the application of temple funds for the welfare of the society
5. To compel the government to work out effective measures to curb the desecration of idols of Deities and the increasing temple thefts
6. To prevent the government from demolishing ancient temples and small shrines (ghumtya)

Mr. Jayesh Thali explained the reasons for forming the Mahasangh. Mr. Chandrakant Pandit appealed to trustees of all the temples in Goa to participate in the Mahasangh and attend, in large numbers, the inauguration function organized in Sri Sant Gadge Maharaj Hall at Porvorim on 8th January at 4.00 pm.
