Opposing the Centre's stand, the Tamil Nadu government has urged the SC to scrap the controversial Sethusamudram project. It also sought a direction to the Centre for declaring the Ram Sethu a national monument.

With the Centre ignoring the Pachauri Committee report advising against implementation of the controversial Sethusamundram project, eminent scientist R K Pachauri has said that he stands by the report and warned of serious ecological ramifications.

The Government had some time ago petitioned the Supreme Court to revive the project that the latter had stayed in 2007 But now,since an expert committee constituted to look into the viability of the Sethusamudram project has made clear that the scheme is neither economically feasible nor ecologically sustainable

The Congress-led UPA Government has once again revived the controversial Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project which, if implemented, will cause the destruction of Ram Setu.

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Monday said the Sethusamudram project to destroy Ram Setu is illegal, arbitrary and unacceptable.

The UPA government has rejected the RK Pachauri Committee report that had found the entire Sethusamudram project unviable on two fronts – economically as ecologically.

Mr. Ashok Singhal in his press statement said "The only way to protect Shri RamSetu is to dismiss Pachauri report and to cancel the whole Setu Samundram Project. " Furthermore he demanded that Shri ram Setu has to be declared an International Heritage

Anti-Hindu UPA government told the SC that a high-level committee in its report has suggested that alternative alignment other than mythological Ram Sethu for Sethusamudram project was not economically and ecologically feasible.

Criticising the government for refusing to take a stand on the issue, Vishwa Hindu Parishad today demanded that the mythological Ram Setu be declared a national monument.

Stuck between political allies and the possibility of offending religious sentiments, the Centre told the Supreme Court that it had no stand on whether the Ram Sethu structure between India and Sri Lanka should be declared a national monument.

Mr. Raut assured the delegation of HJS that he would rigorously follow up the matter in the ‘Upper House’ regarding declaration of ‘Sriram-setu’ as national monument.

From thousand years, entire India and the world firmly believes that the Ram Setu is more than a National Monument. But now Sonia-led UPA govt. is in confused position where it has to tell the SC about its stand on Ram Setu.

New Delhi: The Centre was on Thursday granted more time by the Supreme Court to decide whether the mythological Ram Setu could be declared a national monument. Sc has now given time of 2 weeks.
