Mumbai: Mayor ask Commissioner to stop demolition of temples

Send back the Commissioner for taking action against religious sites : Warning by the Standing Committee !

Issue of removal of religious sites in Mumbai

Without committing contempt of the Supreme Court, the trustees of temples should be given enough time to collect old papers related to temples. Till then, the action against the temples should be held up. The above demand has been made by Mrs. Shraddha Jadhav, the Shiv Sena Mayor. Mumbai: Paying total disregard to the established rules, newly appointed Commissioner Mr. Subodhkumar has undertaken, for the past 8 days, demolition of religious sites in Mumbai branding them as unauthorized. (There are hundreds of unauthorized constructions in Mumbai. In fact, the Government has started destructive practice of regularizing unauthorized slums etc.; but by showing promptness only in targeting religious sites, the Commissioner is representing the secular governance ! – Editor SP) Action has been taken against such 45 religious constructions so far.

Mr. Rahul Shevale, a Shiv Sena municipal councilor and the Chairman of the Standing Committee has given a warning on behalf of all municipal councilors that the Commissioner should take proper steps in this regard only after coordinating with the elected representatives else he will have to be sent back as per the powers held by the Standing Committee. (Congratulations to the members of the Standing Committee for uniting against action against religious constructions! We need such representatives ! – Editor SP)

In today’s meeting, municipal councilors from all parties criticized the Commissioner. The Supreme Court has given directions that ‘coordination with the locals should be established before demolition of religious places. The State Government has also said in its regulation that the local elected representatives should be taken into confidence. There is one regulation that all temples constructed prior to the year 1960, should be treated as authorized. Even then, the Commissioner has paid no heed to such rules and started taking action for which he only has issued a circular. (Unrighteous Commissioner Subodhkumar pays no heed to all the rules to take action against religious sites. – Editor SP) This will not be allowed. The Commissioner is condemned by all municipal councilors. There were many such reactions. Mrs. Manisha Mhaiskar, the additional Commissioner gave a patient hearing to the councilors. Subodhkumar, however, did not come for the meeting. The municipal councilors, therefore, demanded suspension of action being taken against religious constructions and adjourned the meeting.
