Husain’s work not to be displayed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum

Adhik Vaishakh Shuddha Panchami, Kaliyug Varsha 5112

Success of lawful efforts by HJS ! Let us pray gratitude to God for this success !

Mumbai: An exhibition of selected paintings was being organized at Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum in which few paintings by anti-Hindu painter M F Husain were also to be included. As the same was realized by Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for Thane and Raigad, he wrote to the organizers of the exhibition and followed up the matter till the organizers agreed to exclude paintings by Husain.

It was published in ‘DNA’ newspaper’s issue dated 9th April 2010 that there would be an exhibition of paintings collected by Jehangir Nicholas which included works of renowned artists like F. N. Sauza, Ramkumar etc. including M F Husain. Mr. Shivaji Vatkar sent a protest letter to Mr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a director of the museum on 11th April via email on reading the said news; a copy of which was also sent to the museum. It was mentioned in the said letter that Husain had drawn paintings of nude Hindu Deities and Bharatmata which were not worth watching or describing. It would amount to a deliberate insult of all Hindus if Husain’s paintings were displayed in a museum named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj; therefore, such paintings should not be exhibited and if these paintings were to be displayed in this exhibition, even the painting of Prophet Mohammad by an artiste from Denmark should also be displayed. As a result, Mr. Vatkar was contacted by Mr. Mukherjee and informed that the said paintings would not be displayed if they were going to create controversy. He also said that he agreed with the views and would present it in the meeting of Trustees and would write back to Mr. Vatkar.

Sub: Protest against the display of M.F.Husain’s paintings at CSVS museum.

Respected Sir,

That Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is an NGO engaged in Nation building, educating people, about Dharma and Dharmacharan (religion & righteousness), awaking and uniting Hindus peacefully and through legal means. Kindly visit our website www.hindujagruti.org for further details.

It is understood from the news paper DNA-After hrs. Dated 9th April 2010 that your museum is planning to display the work of an absconding painter with  criminal charges  Mr. Maqbul Fida Hussain at Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya.(copy of the news enclosed for reference.)

That it is a fact that one Mr. Maqbool Fida Husain has depicted a lot of Hindu Gods and deities’ nude in his paintings. That at the same time his paintings related to Muslim and other religions does not depict any nudity in respect of the respective, persons, Gods and goddesses. That in his paintings this person shows our Hindu gods and goddesses in vulgar compromising positions which is never encountered in Hindu mythology. For example in one of his paintings he shows mother and goddess Sitamata totally naked masturbating on the long tail of God Hanuman. Whereas Hindu mythology contemplates a very pious relationship of mother and son between goddess Sitamata and God Hanuman; in another painting she is sitting naked on the thigh of naked Ravana. Imagine a bull copulating with mother goddess Parvati and God Shanker watching the act on Shivratri festival. Or Goddess Durgamata in union with her lion! Lord Krishna with hands and feet chopped off! He has drawn picture of naked Bharatmata and invited protests and enemity from proud Indians. Recently he has drawn paintings named Rape of India with reference to terrorists attack of 26/11/2008.As there are daily terrorists attacks in Pakistan he will not dare to draw a picture named gang rape of Pakistan. (Copy of some paintings enclosed for ready reference)

A comparison of his paintings on Hindu mythology and religion and other religion leads to the inevitable conclusion that the Hindu nude paintings appear to be with the sole objective to hurt Hindu religious sentiments and insult the Hindu religion and provoke communal tensions in this country. Thus he is doing his business by drawing poronographical paintings of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

That Mr.M.F.Husain is booked under different Sections of the Indian Penal Code at different police stations all over India and in some cases has obtained bail and in some cases he is declared as absconding. In recent Judgement Supreme court has not given him relief for not appearing for pending cases as he has opted for citizenship of Qatar.

That the above cases are related with deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus as well as endangering religious harmony.

In case if your office goes ahead with the decision of displaying his work in CSVS museum, it will be taken as purposely hurting Hindu sentiments which may lead to inviting protests from all the Hindu groups and proud Indians. Under the pretext of freedom of expression no wise Gallery or museum will plan to display Mohmmad Paigamber’s controversial cartoon drawn by famous Denmark cartoonist.

We therefore request you to kindly keep high esteem and heritage of your CSVS museum by not displaying the work of Mr.M.F.Husain in any form.

Awaiting prompt action and reply.

Thanking you,

Yours truly,
(S.G.Vatkar )
