Panjim (Goa): Various Hindu associations on Thursday held a dharna (sit-in) at Panjim’s Azad Maidan protesting against what they called “defamation” of various Hindu leaders and organisations by the State government.

The concern over possible ban on Sanatan Sanstha was also raised by these people, who condemned the “conspiracy against the religion” by certain quarters.

Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS), Goa convener Jayesh Thali said that the attempts are made to malign an image of Hindu spiritual leaders like Asaram Bapu, Sri Ramdev Maharaj, Shankaracharya and others by the system.

Thali who, a day after the Margao blasts, had said that HJS has no association with Sanatan, Thursday said that the ban on Sanatan is an issue to be considered only if the investigating agencies find adequate proof linking the organisation to the blast.

“Sanatan Ashram at Ramnathi, Ponda, has been “attacked” since last one month and police are not able to nail the culprits because it’s a non-cognizable offence,” he claimed.

People like Shiv Prasad Joshi from Hindu Maha Sabha, Shubha Sawant of Ranragini and Hindu leaders like Ramesh Naik and Sangam Bhosle also expressed their view during the two-hour long protest.

The dharna, which began at 4 in the evening, was attended by 350-odd people across the State.
