Complaint lodged with Talegaon Dabhade Municipal Council
Pune, Maharashtra – Unauthorised mutton stalls have been erected at the main square and along the arterial road in the vicinity of the Talegaon Dabhade railway station. The sale of meat is actively underway from these stalls by hanging animal carcasses in the open. Due to this open display and sale of meat, the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act are being openly flouted. Despite this situation, the local administration has turned a blind eye towards it.

The Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad has demanded decisive action regarding this matter from the Chief Officer of the Talegaon Dabhade Municipal Council. In addition, the Parishad has submitted a formal written complaint to the Minister for Food and Drug Administration, Narhari Zirwal.
The complaint states that meat is placed in open view in front of the shops for sale. Swarms of flies and insects settle on it, while roadside dust and germs accumulate. The sale of meat in such an exposed manner has also led to an overpowering stench in the surrounding locality. This poses a severe health hazard to citizens, particularly young children. Selling meat openly in this manner is an offence under the ‘Food Safety and Standards Act’, while slaughtering animals in public places outside licensed abattoirs is a punishable violation under the ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules’. Therefore, the administration must carry out an inspection of these stalls. A prompt ban should be imposed on shops that slaughter animals in public view and sell meat in the open.

Stating that the points raised in the complaint will be examined, Sanitary Inspector of the Municipal Council, Dattaji Dhavale, stated that if the stalls are found to be illegal and operating through improper methods, strict action will be taken.
