Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The alleged ‘love jihad’ movement in Kerala has a political sub text.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Students Federation of India (SFI) entrenched in campus politics have a new challenger by way of the National Development Front’s (NDF) student wing.

Both ABVP and SFI allege that NDF is carrying out forced conversions.

Manju says she is a victim of ‘love jihad’. The 20-year-old alleges she was duped into love by a Muslim boy, and asked to convert if she wanted to marry him. But she claims she was abandoned after she converted.

"I met him at a bus stop. He used to follow me every day. Somehow, he got my mobile number and started calling me everyday. I thought he loves me but it was my mistake. Now I am not able to face my family. Sometimes I think of committing suicide," claims Manju.

Manju’s allegation is supported by Kerala DGP Jacob Punnose who has filed a report in the Kerala High Court saying that 3,000-4,000 Hindu and Christian girls have been converted to Islam in the last four years as part of an alleged ‘love jihad’.

So what is love jihad?

There is no evidence of any organisation by that name working towards conversion, something which gives the government a comfortable reason to over look the issue.

But some senior retired cops say the rate at which conversion took place in Kerala in the last four years is too alarming to over look.

"We haven’t seen any such organisation called ‘love jihad’. But there is certainly a huge attempt to convert lot of Hindu and Christian girls to Islam and is active even in professional colleges. We have also identified the NDF and its campus front’s links to conversion. We have enough leads for this," says retired IPS officer Subash Babu.

Security agencies say NDF is an off-shoot of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Through its student wing Campus Front, sources in the special branch say, it is going on a conversion drive. Other student bodies like the SFI and ABVP are worried.

"I will not say there is any one converting our girls in large scale in the campuses. That’s the Sangh Parivar’s way of looking at things. But SFI is slowly realising one fact that communalism and terrorism is slowly coming into our campuses. We need to stop that at any cost," says SFI Vice-President AR Rahim.

Saffron voices in Kerala allege foreign funding, saying that ‘love jihadis’ are given expensive mobiles, bikes and cash to fight legal battles.

But they are yet to put up authentic evidence to make their case.
