The two women have been sent a notice banning their entry from the temple for a month.

The Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain has banned the entry of two women for one month for cutting a cake inside the Nandigriha in the temple premises.

The two women, identified as Nandini Joshi and Sadhna Upadhyay, sneaked the cake inside the temple saying it was prasadam. The cake was cut to celebrate the birthday of one of the two friends.

The two clicked pictures while cutting the cake inside the temple premises and forwarded them to their friends on social media platforms. The pictures were widely shared by people in Ujjain following which the Mahakaleshwar temple management got into action and scanned the CCTV footage of the Nandigriha.

According to the temple management, the CCTV footage recorded the two women celebrating and cutting the cake inside the temple.

A complaint was forwarded to the district collector on Sunday following which the two women were identified and served a notice. The two will now have to appear before the SDM and explain why they violated the norms of the temple.

“The Mahakaleshwar temple has its own traditions and norms and cake cutting is not allowed inside the Nandigriha, the action to ban their entry for a month and the notice to them has been served so that others get a message and the sanctity of the temple is maintained,” Ujjain district collector Manip Singh, who is also the administrator of the temple said.

The district administration has also initiated an enquiry against the Home Guard personnel who were manning the entry gates at the time of the incident. “Suitable action will be taken against them if they are found to have aided the two women in sneaking in the cake,” the district administration said.
