Devotees demand immediate investigation and strict action against the culprits
Mumbai — An incident of eggs being thrown at the Shri Ganesh arrival procession of the ‘Mazgaoncha Morya’ public festival committee came to light on the night of 23 August. According to reports, someone initially threw an egg towards the Ganesh idol. After some time, two more eggs were thrown toward the idol.
According to eyewitnesses, the eggs were thrown at the idol; however, because of the roof above it, one egg did not hit it, and the second fell in front of the trolley carrying the idol.

When no arrests were made even late at night following the incident, hundreds of activists from various Ganesh festival committees across Mumbai reached the Byculla police station around 12 midnight, demanding action. Following this, the police registered a case under non-bailable sections against unknown persons.
According to reports, an egg was thrown at the procession between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM on the night of 23 August. About half an hour later, two more eggs were thrown. When the procession reached near the ‘Continental Heights’ tower located at Naralwadi, eggs were allegedly thrown from the ‘C’ wing. A majority of Muslim residents live in this apartment block.
HJS demands strict action against the culprits
Shri. Sunil Ghanwat, State Coordinator of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, termed the attack on the Mazgaon Ganesh procession a deliberate attempt to hurt religious sentiments. He demanded that the police immediately track down the culprits and take strict legal action, warning that a fierce agitation would be launched if swift action was not taken.

Hindus outraged by police inaction
The report claims that after the incident, Hindus demanded that the police question the families living in the building to ascertain who threw the eggs; however the police did not enter the building to investigate.
People angered by the police’s action reached the Byculla police station demanding strict action. Following this, office-bearers of the Ganesh festival committee contacted Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs Minister, Ashish Shelar. After his intervention, the police registered a case against unknown individuals.
Upon learning about this incident, office-bearers and activists from various Ganesh festival committees across Mumbai gathered together. A large number of youth assembled in support.
