Issue of sale of cows to butchers by ‘Vitthal-Rukmini Temple Committee’, Pandharpur

Pandharpur (Maharashtra): There is amazing description of Bhagavan Sree Krushna and cows in Gokul in the life-history of Sree Krushna; but in this ‘Kaliyuga’, the Government’s ‘Vitthal-Rukmini Temple Committee’ is finding it difficult to look after the cows from the ‘gou-shala’ of Vitthal who is worshipped as a form of Lord Krushna. Moreover, the Samiti is accused of selling the cows directly to the butchers resulting in outrage among the warakari devotees. It is surprising that the ‘Temple Committee’ has not bothered to give any explanation despite such grave accusations leveled against it.

A representative of Daily Sanatan Prabhat (DSP), therefore, followed up the matter to find the true position when many shocking transactions made by the Samiti, were brought forth which are given below for information of the readers.

‘Temple Committee’ claims that the bulls were sold to farmers whereas the buyers say that we are not farmers but cattle traders.
In connection with the above accusation, the ‘Temple Committee’ claims that the excess bulls were sold to farmers from whom it was taken in writing that theywould not sell the cattle to butchers. To find the truth behind this claim of the ‘Temple Committee’, the representative of DSP met the agents who had bought those bulls. They informed that they were neither farmers nor did they have farms but they were traders of cattle. They also gave a letter in writing about selling the bulls in the market when asked about the sold bulls. This shows that the ‘Temple Committee’ has told lies about selling the bulls to farmers.

The representative of DSP met Mr. Dnyaneshwar Kulkarni of Temple Committee’s ‘Gou-shala’ and asked him about the sale. He replied that the Samiti was unable to afford maintenance of those bulls. Presently, there are 25 cows, 24 calves and 8 bulls in the ‘gou-shala’. The DSP representative also met the secretary of agricultural products market committee when he informed that the committee did not check the identities of sellers and buyers.

Thereafter, the representative went to the house of one of the buyers but the house was locked; so he made enquiry with his neighbours who confirmed that he was a butcher.
The DSP representative then again went to the buyer’s house on the following day who categorically said that the Temple Committee had not taken anything in writing from him about use of the bull for farming. He said that he was a cattle trader and he immediately sold of the bulls in the market. He, however, said that the Samiti had taken his signature on a paper where some portion was blank. As such the Samiti might have written something there but he had not accepted any condition of the Samiti. The buyer gave his explanantion in writing in front of 3 witnesses.

The whole incident shows that the Samiti is trying to save its skin and is carrying out its work like any other irresponsible staff of the government department. It is the duty of every Hindu to stop such malpractices and protect the cows. All Hindus should, therefore, demand dissolution of the Temple Committee for its unrighteous act. The Government too should not try to cover up and must take necessary action against the concerned.

Mr. Kiran Ghadage, the manager of the Temple Committee said that it was a ploy of Dr. Seetaram Alva as this year he was denied the permission to perform the ritual of applying sandalwood paste (chandanlep) and therefore, he has been talking against the Samiti.
Dr. Seetaram Alva, a devotee of Lord Vitthal dreamt that the milk and curd offered to Lord Vitthal while performing ritualistic worship should be obtained from the ‘gou-shala’ of the Temple Committee and therefore, he kept on offering cows to the Temple Committee and has so far offered 22 cows. The number of cows increased and went up to 85. Dr. Alva also used to give offerings for taking care of the cows; but the ‘Temple Committee’ sold 18 animals for only Rs. 74,000/- without informing Dr. Alva. Dr. Alva said, “This has hurt my feelings. If Temple Committee was unable to maintain the cows, we could have sent them to the ‘gou-shala’ at Parmar; but selling them to butchers is a sin.”
