Appeal to protest against Mathrubhumi Newspaper for denigrating Shri Ganesh

We at Hindu Janajagruti Samiti have received several complaints from devout Hindus against the insulting caricature of revered Hindu Deity Shri Ganesh depicting Him as CPM leader V.S. Achuthanandan by Mathrubhumi Daily Newspaper.

Readers may please note that the picture has not been published to hurt religious sentiments of Hindus but published for them to know about denigration !

Upon reviewing the complaints, the HJS team immediately appealed to Newspaper requesting them to remove the parody from the newspaper. In objection, HJS explained that there cannot be any comparison in any form of a politician with a Deity. Shri Ganesh is a highly revered Deity in Hinduism and Hindus worship Him with immense faith. In addition, the appeal also stressed that this caricature has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and also questioned that would Newspaper show courage to publish similar cartoons depicting Gods from other religions?

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) team has not received any response from Mathrubhumi Daily Newspaper editors. Consequently, HJS now requests all readers to appeal against this dreadful denigration peacefully and lawfully by either writing an email or calling the numbers below requesting to remove cartoon from Mathrubhumi Daily Newspaper agency.

Appeal letter by HJS

|| Shree ||

Namaskar,

We at Hindu Janajagruti Samiti have received several complaints from devout Hindus about the denigrating and insulting caricature of revered Hindu Deity Shri Ganesh depicting Him as CPM leader V.S. Achuthanandan by Mathrubhumi Daily Newspaper agency.

We are sending this appeal letter to notify you that the depiction of a Hindu Deity in this manner is outrageous and appalling as it not only denigrates the Hindu Deity and Hinduism but also makes a mockery of them. Shri Ganesh is a Deity, whereas the CPM leader is a politician. There cannot be any comparison in any form of a politician with a Deity. Shri Ganesh is a highly revered Deity in Hinduism and Hindus worship Him with immense faith. Hindus worship Shri Ganesh prior to commencing any ritual or an auspicious act. He is called the ‘Remover of obstacles’, ‘Remover of unhappiness’ (Vighnaharta, Dukhhaharta), etc. If His image is used as a caricature for the purpose of gaining publicity it leads to insult and denigration. In your publication you have shown CPM leader V.S. Achuthanandan depicted as Shri Ganesh being offered sweets by few party workers and he is taking it with his trunk! This caricature has offended the religious sentiments of Hindus. Would you have published similar cartoons depicting Gods from other religions?

It could be that you might not be aware of the denigration of Shri Ganesh; however, hurting religious feelings is an offense as per the Indian Penal Code section 295A and 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and is punishable by law.

We would also request you to review any material to be published in the Mathrubhumi daily Newspaper at any future date to ensure that it does not offend the religious sentiments of Hindus. HJS can help with the reviewing of such material if requested. Based on the above, we ask you to remove this caricature from your web pages immediately and render an unconditional apology to Hindus for publishing the same.
We at Hindu Janajagruti Samiti have campaigned to educate people about such denigrations that occur through various products, and after learning about the denigration, many companies have removed the Deities’ pictures from their products.
