Anti-Sonia advert in NY TIMES

It could spark off a huge controversy but unsavoury ads have appeared in the New York Times slamming UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi following her presentation at the 62nd United Nations General Assembly on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), where she was invited to deliver a talk on the Mahatma’s message of peace and non-violence.

The advertisements have been placed by activists supposedly. On Saturday morning (October 6), the 1 million odd readers of the New York Times woke up to a full-page advertisement viciously attacking UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi comparing her most unfavorably with Mahatma Gandhi –"Instead of a true Gandhian delivering his message of peace and non-violence, Sonia Gandhi who is not a representative of Gandhian values was chosen."

In an expensive full-page advertisement in New York Times on Saturday, a coalition of Indian organisations blasted Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi for representing India on October 2 at the United Nations on the occasion of International Day of Non-Violence. It claims that protests against the visit were planned by a newly-floated group, Forum for Saving Gandhi Heritage and several other organisations. This was a humiliating public character assassination apparently triggered by Sonia’s presentation at the 62nd United Nations General Assembly on Gandhi Jayanti.

Clearly agitated by the move, the group that published this near $ 65,000 ad took their public deploration to the streets protesting loudly outside the UN offices while the Congress Chief’s presentation was underway inside. The latest public deploration advertised in one of America’s leading newspapers, some say has gone too far deeming it inappropriate to air the nation’s dirty laundry in an international forum.

The people behind the ad seem to be agitated that Sonia Gandhi was invited to deliver a talk on Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence at the United Nations General Assembly on his birthday on October 2.
