Nafisa embroiled in controversy over painting

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Social activist Nafisa Ali is the latest to court controversy over MF Hussain’s paintings as she has bought one of the master’s latest pieces, which allegedly shows Hindu Godesses in an indecent manner and has been served a show cause notice for it on a complaint filed by a Shiv Sena leader.

MF Hussain is known to court controversy for his paintings and Nafisa Ali has been dragged into one for allegedly buying one of his controversial paintings but this noted social activist is vehemently denying the charge.

Nafisa says, " I wish I had so much money that i could buy an MF Hussain painting but I would really like the courts to decide the facts since its sub-judice and the relevance and the injustice will be revealed automatically. The country knows them well (referring to Shiv Sena leaders). I’m a social worker and a social activist and I would like to forgive, forget and bring together secular India.

The painting Nafisa Ali has been accused of buying allegedly depicts Hindu goddesses in an indecent manner. A show cause was slapped on her earlier this year on a complaint filed by a local Shiv Sena leader.

Jay Bhagwan Goyal, leader, Shiv Sena said, "If you buy stolen things then you too are a thief. Hussain made the offensive painting and she bought it. She is encouraging him to paint indecent pictures of the goddesses. That is why she is the co-accused. When the time comes we will submit the proof in court and ensure that she is punished."

Nafisa prefers not to let herself be drawn into the debate of whether buying a painting can constitute an offence. There is some relief for this activist as the Delhi High court has restrained the lower court from proceeding against her till January next year.
