Reports from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) : safety of the people in the State has gone for a toss under Akhilesh Yadav-ruled Uttar Pradesh
Dynastic politics has done the greatest harm to our country. The Gandhi-Nehru family at the national level and Mulayam Singh’s family on a State level in Uttar Pradesh — the country’s most populous State — are preserving this most regressive tradition in Indian politics.
In yet another instance of promoting nepotism, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has fielded another one of his nephews, Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, as the SP candidate for the by-election for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. All four Lok Sabha members of the Samajwadi Party are from Mulayam Singh’s family. Mulayam himself had won from Azamgarh and Mainpuri, later vacating the Mainpuri seat from where he is now fielding his nephew.
Most members of Mulayam’s family are employed in the Samajwadi Party and hold high ranks.
Speaking on this issue, senior journalist Alok Verma, Editor-In-Chief of News Street TV, said, “This is because of the sense of insecurity of the SP leadership. Mulayam Singh Yadav is not ready to allow anybody from outside the family to hold key positions in the party. To win elections, the party has a one-point agenda — giving a free hand to goons and appeasement of Muslims. The SP Government and party leadership have no vision for the all round development of the State.”
It seems that Mulayam Singh Yadav is running the Samajwadi Party as a Private Limited Company and all important posts are being held by his son, brothers, cousins and nephews. This is why the opposition parties rightly hold the rising culture of nepotism in the ruling party responsible for backwardness and poor law & order in the State.
Some political analysts are speculating that given the widespread criticism of poor performance by Akhilesh Yadav as Chief Minister, his father could replace him with someone outside his clan but his decision to field Tej Pratap Yadav from Mainpuri effectively puts an end to such speculation.
Amid numerous incidents highlighting the worsening law & order situation in Uttar Pradesh, a report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is enough to show how safety of the people in the State has gone for a toss under Akhilesh Yadav-ruled Uttar Pradesh. The report suggests that in the first 10 months of SP regime, as many as 33,824 cases of violent crimes were recorded. This includes nearly 2,000 rapes and 4,966 murders. Given the recent incidents of violent crimes like gangrapes, murders, communal riots are evidence to the fact that the law & order situation in Uttar Pradesh is miserable.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself has admitted on record that nearly 30 incidents of communal violence have taken place in the State so far during his rule. However, media reports suggest that this figure is much higher — over 100. But Mulayam Singh Yadav does not seem to care about improving the situation by stepping in to replace the non-performing Chief Minister.
Mulayam Singh Yadav was in 1970s and 1980s was a leader known for raising issues concerning the people. He led masses against Congress’s apathy towards the poor and unprivileged sections of the society. But each time, after becoming Chief Minister, his administration failed to do any good for the people. His rule always grabbed media attention for bad reasons like poor law & order, police brutality, communal clashes, corruption, etc.
In 2012, he promised the people of the State better administration than the previous Mayawati Government. After winning the Assembly election in March, he appointed his naive son Akhilesh Yadav the Chief Minister. People had lots of expectations from the young Chief Minister but his rule proved to be catastrophic. After little more than two years of ruling, he is seen as a Chief Minister who has failed on all fronts.
Before assuming office, Akhilesh Yadav was SP’s State president. Democratically, it was expected that he would hand over this responsibility to someone else. Doing so would have been better for the functioning of the administration of India’s most populous State as the Chief Minister would have been able to focus more on improving situation of the State.
Lacking a vision and a will to work for poverty ridden people of the State, Akhilesh Yadav messed up the administrative machinery of Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav’s apathy towards people resulted into his party’s most humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha election. It was also a severe jolt for Mulayam Singh’s Prime Ministerialial ambitions. He was expecting to win 50 seats in Uttar Pradesh, which would have helped him become PM with the support of Congress and other smaller parties in case of a hung Lok Sabha.
