Madikeri, Karnataka – An illegal tomb-like structure (mazaar) was constructed in the premises of the famous Sri Siddheshwara Temple at Mattur near Maldare in Virajpet taluk. The ‘Hindu Suraksha Samiti’ has opposed this incident and demanded stringent action against the culprits. The Samiti has also called for a movement in this matter.

According to the temple management, a mazaar-like structure decorated with flowers was found in the temple premises on Sunday, 26 July. The management registered a complaint with the police and also handed over CCTV footage, which is claimed to show some people arriving in a vehicle and installing the structure.
On 27 July, a large number of villagers staged a protest outside the temple and blocked the road for some time. The protesters accused the police of delay in taking action. During this, people removed the mazaar-like structure and examined it; it was reported to be empty from inside.
The protesters also alleged that non-vegetarian food had been consumed in the temple premises. They demanded an impartial investigation into the matter and the prompt arrest of the accused. Leaders of Hindu organisations warned that if action is not taken soon, the movement will be intensified.
Police and forest department officials reached the spot and assured action. More than 100 policemen have been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control. Investigation into the matter is underway.
- Such brazen acts occur only because of the anti-Hindu policies and weak governance of the Congress administration in Karnataka. Religious fanatics feel emboldened only when the State fails to uphold the rule of law and protect Hindu places of worship.
- Hindus must remain united and resolute until this illegal mazaar is completely removed and the guilty are brought to justice.
