Chandigarh: With the festival of Raksha Bandhan around the corner, city doctors have warned parents to check the Rakhis their children buy this season. There are several Chinese Rakhis in the market to fulfil children’s love for their favourite cartoon characters like Doremon, Tom and Jerry, Alladin, Shin Chan, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. These same Rakhis could give your children several ailments, allergic rash and severe reactions, say doctors.

While making a round of the city markets, it has been found that over 80 per cent Rakhis on display this season have Chinese raw material. Despite knowing the ill effects of these Chinese bands, the parents were seen demanding these for their kids. The Chinese have mastered the art of attracting crowds by making traditional idols of Indian Gods like Ganesha and Hanuman on the satin bands, which cost anywhere between Rs 20 and Rs 450. These Rakhis will appear on the wrists of children during the coming Raksha Bandhan. If the medical experts are to be believed, these low-priced Chinese ‘wrist art’ comprise toxic material and may cause skin infections.
They have warned the parents and their kids to avoid such Rakhis and to take preventive measures in case of skin irritation. Dr Parminder Chaman, a city-based skin specialist in Sector 19 said that the parents should first avoid buying such Rakhis for their wards. “In case of any irritation or infection, use calamine oil immediately. If still there is no relief from irritation, then anti-allergic tablet is suggested. In case of no relief then the affected person should be taken to the skin specialist”, she said. The Rakhis are mostly imported by small traders who have little knowledge about the dangers of lead and cadmium in their paints.
The Chinese Rakhis have become a rage among kids because of the Doremon and Shinchan and many other cartoon characters on them. This week, anyone buying a Rakhi for a kid has been only picking up the Chinese Rakhi. These have a dual motive. After the festival, the figurines can be used as toys. Sneha Kapoor, a mother of two kids said, “My son is very enthusiastic about the Raksha Bandhan. Doremon, Tom and Jerry, Alladin, Shin Chan are some of the cartoon characters on his list which he has demanded from his sister. I am concerned about my son’s health but the kids are difficult to handle with their craze for Chinese Rakhis.”
