Mumbai : Seething over being thrown a knife at after accidentally swapping serving spoons for two different dishes, a 35-year-old catering employee went on a rampage attacking two of his colleagues in Girgaum, where he chased one of the victims for 300 metres stabbing him repeatedly until he succumbed to his injuries. The other one was attacked so viciously in the stomach that the stabs caused his entire gut and intestines to fall out.
The accused, Anwar Nasruddin Shaikh, and the victims Suraj (22) and his maternal uncle Ramesh Patel (45) worked as freelance staff and used to be based at CP Tank in Girgaum from where catering companies picked them up to be taken to various events. According to the VP Road police, the trio was working at a wedding in the Koli Samaj Hall in Malad where Shaikh accidentally put the spoon used for serving aamras (mango pulp) in a vegetarian dish drawing him Suraj’s ire. “This led to an argument where Suraj threw a knife used for cutting onions at him, which landed on his nose, causing a small cut,” said PSI Raju Surve.
Insulted over the act, Shaikh came to CP Tank the next day on Wednesday at around 5.30 pm with a knife to get back at the duo. The police said he first confronted them for attacking him that way and then began stabbing them when the victims began to flee in different directions. While Patel ran in the direction of VP Road, Suraj bolted towards Katta Galli. Shaikh chased the latter, intercepting him near the Professional Couriers office.
“He stabbed him again there, but Suraj still ran another few hundred metres, reaching a paan shop in Nagmadhav Galli where he launched his second salvo of stabs. Suraj was stabbed around four times in the chest and died while locals grabbed hold of Shaikh and brought him to the police station,” an officer said. He has been charged with murder and been remanded to police custody till May 29. The police has also recovered the murder weapon, along with CCTV cameras in nearby shops in the area, that have captured the incident.
