Tharoor to praise Hussain: HJS protests

In a mail to the ex-Under Secretary General of the UN Shashi Tharoor, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has appealed to him to cancel his programme praising the notorius, criminal and absconding Indian painter M.F Hussain painter in a lecture on Saturday, March 10, 2007, 4 pm at the ‘Peabody Essex Museum’ US, titled ‘Shashi Tharoor Presents: Mining the Mahabharata: How Hussain and Others Have Reinvented the Epic’.

Subject: Request to cancel the programme of praising M. F. Husain.

We recently came to know that you are going to praise the notorius, criminal and absconding Indian painter M.F Hussain painter in a lecture on Saturday, March 10, 2007, 4 pm at the ‘Peabody Essex Museum’ US, titled ‘Shashi Tharoor Presents: Mining the Mahabharata: How Hussain and Others Have Reinvented the Epic’. We were shocked to know about it, as Husain has been wanted by Indian police and the Courts as per the various news reported in the media. Few of the latest developments are

3. As per news http://www.ibnlive.com/news/hussain-painting-faces-controversy-again/9574-8.html ,the Central Home Ministry has directed the Police Commissioners of Mumbai and Delhi to initiate appropriate action against the anti-Hindu painter M F Husain. His Bharatmata painting is under scrutiny by the UPA government. And bureaucrats are also unwilling to give a go-ahead to any public exhibition of this artwork.

It was quite understandable as to in view of such a situation how appropriate is it for you to glorify Husain? This act of yours is cutting a very sorry figure of your self and tarnishing your image by association with criminal wanted by Indian Police and the courts. Would you also glorify the Danish Cartoonist who drew the Prophet’s cartoons?

In the past you have also lent support to confer Bharat Ratna to M.F Husain. By our mail dated 23-12-2006 (*see below) we had appealed to you to withdraw support. There was no reply or any response to this from you.
We hereby appeal to you to cancel this inexplicable programme of praising Husain and hope that you do so at the earliest.

We look forward to your prompt reply and action in this regard.
