The statement that river Ganga is getting polluted due to religious rites and rituals of Hindus is misleading. In fact, river Ganga is polluted due to water in drainage discharged from cities and chemically poisoned water from the industries. Now, due to Tihari dam being built on the river Ganga, the existence of the river Ganga is threatened. This was stated by Shri. Manoj Yadav of Ganga Raksha Andolan.

While speaking on the topic ‘Protection of the river Ganga’, Shri. Manoj Yadav said, “In order to secure financial assistance from Gorbachev, Rajiv Gandhi approved the erection of Tihari dam, which was earlier rejected by Indira Gandhi. This project, which was earlier claimed to have capacity to generate 1000 MW of electricity is now generating only 250 MW. The life of this dam, which was earlier estimated to be 140 years is now said to last only for 40 years as per the Government sources. This is not only deceit, but a treachery. The work to build 522 dams on the river Ganga, on the lines of Tihari dam is in progress. Building of these dams is a deep rooted conspiracy to destroy river Ganga and all pilgrim centres on it. The claim to generate electricity through this exercise is a deceit. Rulers, contractors, establishments are earning money through the medium of these dams. Indian citizens are unaware of this conspiracy. Those opposing this conspiracy are being suppressed.
