District Collector orders enquiry regarding the deplorable condition of Salav bridge at Revdanda (Raigad) !

Is the administration waiting for more lives to be lost ? – Sunil Ghanwat

‘While 40 people were killed in a bridge accident on the Savitri river, the administration in Raigad does not seem to have learned anything from this. The committee appointed to probe the accident has given instructions for repairs but the administration has ignored the condition of other bridges in Raigad. Salav and Nagothane Bridges on Revdanda River, which have heavy traffic flow through them, are in deplorable conditions. An appeal in this regard was given to Raigad District Collector on behalf of ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. After that, the Raigad District Collector has instructed the concerned department to inquire about the condition of Salav bridge and take appropriate action. The administration did not wake up even after the catastrophic accident on the bridge over Savitri river. After losing how many more lives will the  administration wake up?’, asked Shri. Sunil Ghanwat, State Coordinator for Hindu Janjagruti Samithi in Maharashtra and Chhatisgarh, during a press conference held at Alibag. The press conference was called for explaining the terrible condition of the bridges in Revdanda. Mrs. Vishakha Athavale of Sanatan Sanstha was also present in the conference.

When the representatives of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti inspected the Salav bridge, it was found that grass and shrubs growing on it are causing cracks in some places in this bridge. The bridge neither has lights nor any instruction board. There are no Road blinkers or Kent Eyes on either side of the bridge. The government had issued orders for repair and safety of these stone arch bridges; but no action is taken yet. The risk of accidents especially during the rainy season and night are very high. On an appeal given by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti on November 15, to the district collector, directions were given to Sub-divisional officers to take immediate action on the issue. We expect the administration also to complete the repair work with the same promptness, expressed Shri.Ghanwat.

The condition of the bridge at Nagothane is also poor ! : An appeal in this regard also was given to the District Collector on behalf of ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ on 1st December. It was demanded that the administration should repair this bridge immediately.

After the collapse of Mahad bridge over Savitri river caused due to mere negligence of administration, a committee wad appointed to investigate the accident. This committee suggested measures like arrangement of lights, notice boards, pruning of plants etc. on the bridges. The government spends millions of rupees on such committees; however, the administration of Raigad district did not take any action on the instructions given by the committee. Therefore, if such an accident happens again in the future and someone is killed in it, a case of manslaughter should be registered against the concerned officials who are negligent in their work. Considering the seriousness of this issue, dangerous bridges should be repaired in time and care should be taken to ensure that no family becomes destitute due to such accidents in future, demanded Ghanwat in strong words while speaking in the conference.
