Bilaspur violence: Delegation of Hindu leaders meets Deputy CM Vijay Sharma

Raipur, Chhattisgarh – In the wake of recent violent stone-pelting and unrest in the Khaparganj and Masanganj areas of Bilaspur, a delegation of representatives from various pro-Hindu organisations met Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma at Raipur Airport. 

The delegation presented a comprehensive memorandum to the Minister, alleging that the attack was premeditated and demanding a thorough, impartial investigation into the violence.

In response, Home Minister Vijay Sharma assured the delegation that strict legal action would be taken against the real perpetrators while promising that no innocent person would face harassment during the probe. 

Key demands in the memorandum 

The memorandum submitted to the Home Minister by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and other pro-Hindu organisations highlighted the following demands:

  • Immediate release of innocent Hindu youths: The memorandum strongly objected to the detention of Hindu youths who had gone to the local police station to seek justice. It called for the immediate, unconditional cancellation of false cases filed against them, and their honourable release.
  • Punitive ‘Bulldozer action’: The delegation demanded that the administration identify properties from which stones and petrol bombs were hurled and execute immediate demolition (‘bulldozer action’) on those illegal structures.
  • SIT inquiry & house-to-house search: Pointing to the use of petrol bombs and explosives, the memorandum requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe whether there was a broader anti-national conspiracy, along with intensive house-to-house searches in affected pockets. 
  • Probe into funding: The delegation called for a thorough investigation into the financial sources of those who targeted Hindu residents, as well as strict action to unmask any political or administrative patrons shielding the rioters. 
  • Strict charges under BNS: Utilizing CCTV footage, viral videos, and media reports, police should identify the primary instigators and charge them under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rioting, attempt to murder, and damage to public property.

The delegation meeting the Home Minister was led by devout Hindu representatives, including Shri. Kamal Vishwas, Advocate Ashish Sharma, Shri. Sudip Sanatani, and several others. 

Background of the Bilaspur violence: What exactly happened on the day of Raksha Bandhan? 

The submission of the memorandum follows days of high tension across the City Kotwali police station limits in Bilaspur.

The trigger: Tensions erupted on the night of 28–29 August following an altercation between two groups near Khaparganj over personal rivalry and inflammatory social media posts.

Escalation & petrol bombs: The situation quickly deteriorated into stone-pelting from rooftops and narrow alleys, along with reported throwing of petrol bombs. Unrest spread to the City Kotwali police station premises, resulting in vandalism of private vehicles and ‘Dial-112’ police vehicles.

Police injuries: Several personnel were injured during the violent attack, including Tarbahar Station In-charge (TI) Ravi Tiwari, CSP Gagan Kumar, and Constable Sonu Pal, with some receiving 12 to 14 stitches for severe injuries.

Security & prohibitory orders: Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal and SSP Rajnesh Singh deployed over 500 police and paramilitary personnel. Police deployed tear gas and baton charges to regain control, while prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed across the City Kotwali area. Dozens of individuals were subsequently identified and booked via CCTV and drone surveillance footage.
