Priest arrested and released

Tuljapur (Maharashtra): Mr. Pravin Gedam, the President of Sree Tuljabhavani Mandir Sansthan Trust and District Collector has issued an order, which is against Dharma, that the priest should not stand in front of the idol of Bhavani Devi while performing ‘puja’. (Out of the 16 rituals to be perfumed [shodshopchar] in any ‘puja’, 11 are required to be done standing in front of the idol. It is not proper to take decisions related to religious matter by any government official but such decisions should be taken by the authority on Dharma. Followers of other religions are very sensitive towards the issues related to their Dharma/ faith but Hindus are indifferent towards Dharma and therefore, such things take place ! – Editor SP) This order has enraged the people. The representation submitted protesting against the order has been taken no cognizance by the District Collector and the heretic order has not yet been withdrawn in writing. The Priests are still performing ‘puja’ rituals under pressure.

The District Collector sent the order for the priests through General Manager on 6th May saying that there had been complaints from the devotees taking ‘darshan’ from distance and therefore, the priests should not stand in front of the idol while performing ‘Abhishek’ else, legal action would be taken against them. (It is most condemnable on the part of the Government to issue such order without thinking about any other alternative ! – Editor SP)

In the letter issued on the following day on behalf of priest committee, it has been mentioned that the tradition of ‘Abhishek’ on the idol is observed since ancient times. It is necessary to balance one’s body while doing ‘Abhishek’; besides things like cleaning of the idol, applying ‘kumkum’ on the forehead, adorning the idol with the ornaments etc. needs to be done standing in front of the idol; therefore, re-thinking is required to be done about the order. (What action was taken on the letter? Hindus express their protests in lawful manner and do not follow the path of aggression generally taken by people of other religions; maybe that’s why the Government is paying no heed to their request. Isn’t the Government forcing Hindus to follow the aggressive path in such manner? – Editor SP)

Even then, on 18th May, criminal action was taken under clause 188 of Indian Penal Code against the two priests Mr. Nagesh Kadam and Mr. Shivraj Patil. (Will the Government dare to take action against any maulavi? – Editor SP) This has created a furor among the priests and devotees. Meeting was arranged on behalf of the priest committee and MNS with the District Collector (DC) on 19th May wherein a memorandum was submitted in the name of the Chief Minister to cancel the order and stop harassment of priests which mellowed down the DC a bit. He said, “I will not come in between the religious traditions and it was my only purpose that the devotee should get ‘darshan’ in proper manner.” The action against the priests has been withheld but case has not been withdrawn even after 2 weeks. (What are the so-called big pro-Hindu organizations and political parties going to do in this case? Will they get justice for the priests? – Editor SP) The order has also not been withdrawn in writing. (Such DC is anti-Hindu who is not issuing withdrawal order in writing. All devotees should collectively ask for an explanation to the official senior to the DC ! – Editor SP)
