Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government has prepared ‘Cultural Policy Draft 2010’ to determine the cultural policy of the State on the occasion of the golden jubilee year of Maharashtra State. The suggestions given by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) are valuable and expansive besides being lawful from the viewpoint of adoption in the cultural policy. The draft of cultural policy should, therefore, be finalized giving due consideration to HJS suggestions, was the demand made by Mr. Sudhir Mungantiwar, the newly elected zonal president of BJP through a letter sent to Mr. Ashok Chavan.

Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad has submitted a representation to the State Government pointing out many serious mistakes and drawbacks in the draft on cultural policy suggesting some modifications; a copy of which was forwarded to Mr. Sudhir Mungantiwar, the zonal president of BJP. Mr. Mungantiwar promptly took note of the representation and sent a letter to the above effect to the Chief Minister along with a copy of the representation of HJS. Mr. Mungantiwar has demanded that the Chief Minister should personally look into the matter and issue orders to the concerned for carrying out necessary modifications to the draft and keep Mr. Mungantiwar posted about the action taken on the same.

Few of the serious mistakes pointed out by HJS

1. Under the guise of enriching Marathi language, words from all languages will be adopted which will, in fact, make the language impure and adulterated.

2. No special provision has been made in the cultural policy for growth and propagation of ‘Sanskrit’ language.

3. There have been special provisions made for the growth of foreign languages like English, Arabian, Persian, Urdu etc. besides scholarships, grants coaching classes etc. for these languages.

4. There is a plan to propagate only the thoughts of Phula- Shahu- Ambedkar.

5. A policy to publish the preachings of only humanitarian saints has also been decided; thus, the Government has tried to create two groups among Saints one as humanitarian and another as non-humanitarian.

Few important demands made by HJS through the representation

1. The Government’s attention has been drawn to the denigration taking place through films, plays, advertisements and newspapers etc. of Hindu Deities, Saints, Scriptures, religious rituals and great national heroes; therefore, a stringent law should be made for prevention of denigration.

2. In the entire cultural policy, no reference has been made to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A mention should be made in the policy about the task of protection of culture and Marathi language performed by Chhatrapati.
