HJS effect : GBSHSE to remove lesson based on disputed Maria Sharapova from text book

Panaji : Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary education (GBSHSE) have decided to remove the lesson based on disputed Maria Sharapova in the next edition of the text book. Earlier Russia’s sportsperson Maria Sharapova was found guilty of consuming drugs has been banned by International Tennis Federation for 2 years and hence Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has demanded to  GBSHSE and NCERT to remove the chapter of Maria Sharapova from NCERT IXth Std English text book. The GBSHSE had sent a circular to all the schools in the state on 21st July informing about their decision.

Earlier HJS had demanded to GBSHSE and NCERT through a memorandum that Maria Sharapova has been banned for two years by the International Tennis Federation for using a prohibited drug ‘Meldonium’. The memorandum further says that The Goa Board  N.C.E.R.T IX STD English text book  ‘Beehive’ has a chapter Lesson 8  ‘Reach for the top’ Part II on Maria Sharapova.  The banning of Maria Sharapova is due to use of unfair, dishonest means to acquire fame and money. This is an act of characterless person. Lessons in the books of students are meant to inspire students and build their character and morality. What inspiration are the students to draw from her now? Secondly when there are so many Indian icons and personalities why do we need to use examples of persons outside the country where the conditions they have are different from ours?  GBSHSE has decided to remove the lesson in the next edition of the book and has also instructed to the school through a circular that now while teaching the said lesson stress must be given on moral values, the ill-effects of taking a bad path and the need to imprint good values for creating a nation and ideal society. The heads of schools should be vigilant to see that these suggestions stated in the circular are being followed very strictly says the circular.
