Women should remain within the limits prescribed under Dharmashastra : Shankaracharya

Issue regarding women entering temple sanctum at Shani Shingnapur

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) : Law has its own place while Hindus’ traditions have place of their own. We abide by Dharma-shastra. Ancient traditions and customs based on science should be followed. Women should stay within their prescribed limits. They should not climb temple sanctum of Shanidev, was the frank opinion expressed by Shankaracharya Jagatguru Swami Swarupanand Saraswatiji Maharaj of ‘Jyotish’ and ‘Dwaraka Peetha’ while speaking to representative of ‘Dainik Sanatan Prabhat’. Mumbai High Court directed Maharashtra Government in its order on 30th March 2016 that women should get entry wherever men are allowed to go.

An Act should be passed to that effect if women are to be prohibited entry at Shani Shingnapur; or if it is related to maintaining sanctity of temple, give explanation on the subject within two days. Shankaracharya expressed his opinion on the above issue. Shankaracharya said that Trupti Desai (of Bhoomata Brigade) is an atheist and does not represent women, in general. Her attempt to enter the temple is a farce and is politically motivated.

I am not anti-women ! – Shankaracharya

I am not anti-women. A woman is like a Goddess when she is a girl. After marriage, she is given respect as Rajarajeshwari and when she becomes old, she is like a mother. Deities reside wherever a woman is worshipped; but everyone should remain within the limits prescribed under Dharma-shastra, stated Shankaracharya Jagatguru Swami Swarupananda of Dwaraka Peetha.
