RSS took hasty stand on women entering temples : HJS

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a Hindu organisation established in 2002, released a statement on Sunday criticising the RSS for its haste in saying that women should not be banned from entering certain temple premises. HJS said that such decisions should instead be left to Acharya Pitha — a dharma sansad, or ‘parliament of dharma’ as the statement put it — set up by Adya Shankaracharya.

“In case any dispute (regarding Hindu tenets) is to arise as time passes, Adya Shankaracharya has given authority to Acharya Pitha, established by him, to take an appropriate decision. Just as political decisions are taken in Parliament by the elected representatives of the people, similar decisions regarding dharma should be taken in the parliament of dharma (dharma sansad),” the statement said.

It added: “If such decisions were taken on the platform of organisations instead of the dharma sansad, it would create a lot of confusion in the future.” The statement further said: “Therefore, the stand declared by the RSS over the entry of women in temples may project that the science of dharma is false, which in turn may provide strength to anti-dharma progressive elements. These progressive elements will not restrict themselves to shouting slogans of Bharat’s destruction and celebrating ‘Mahishasur anniversary’ in universities.”

HJS was also of the view that the Hindu community would get the wrong message if a devout Hindu body like the RSS backed down when faced with opposition from an ‘anti-dharma’ person such as Trupti Desai, who launched agitations at the Shani Shingnapur and Tryambakeshwar temples in favour of women entering the sanctum sanctorum of these temples.
