Belly dancers in Mumbai Janmashtami celebration sparks row

Hindus should boycott anti-Hindu politicians in forthcoming politicians. They should ask question about anti-Hindu activities by such anti-Hindu politicians!

Mumbai:
It was all colours, fun and frenzy as Janmashtami celebrations got bigger and better this year.

In one part of Mumbai it was another kind of celebration as belly dancers from Ukraine danced to entertain. But not everyone was impressed.

The organizer Vijay Kamble of the NCP did not find anything wrong in using Ukranian dancers for his dahi handi event in Janmashtami on Sunday. But the opposition was quick to slam the move calling it hypocrisy.

“The NCP is mixing religion with commercialisation. They first got dancers to cricket, now Janmashtami. It’s in bad taste. The state government should take some action,” said Nitin Gadkari, leader, BJP.

Even the Shiv Sena known for its moral policing was quick to say that the NCP was merely following the example of Sharad Pawar who brought cheerleaders to cricket for the Indian Premier League.

But for the party that spearheaded the ban on dance bars in Maharashtra, the change of heart seems ironic.

“If it’s objectionable no one will be spared. Next time not only at the party level but also at the state level this will not happen,” said R R Patil, Deputy Chief Minister, Maharashtra.

Purists feel the broad line between entertainment and tradition has been overstepped while others say there’s nothing wrong with foreigners dancing at traditional events. It’s clearly a debate with no clear answers.
