Kanchi seer, 11 others charged in assault case

New Delhi: A sessions court in Chennai on Monday framed charges against the Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi and 11 others for masterminding the assault on the former auditor of the Mutt.

A group of armed men had assaulted the former auditor G Radhakrishnan, his wife, and an attendant at his residence in September 2002.

Besides the seer, the other accused in the case are Mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer, Raghu (brother of junior pontiff Vijayendra Saraswathi), Appu, Kathiravan, Meenatchi Sundaram, Anand, Lakshmanan, Bhoominathan, Kannan, Kumar and Ravi Subramaniam, who turned an approver later.

The charges were framed against the accused under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder) read with section 109 (abetment) of the Indian Penal Code.

Chargesheet in the case was filed in 2005.

The Sankaracharya was also arrested in November 2004 in connection with the murder of Kanchipuram Varadaraja Perumal temple manager Sankararaman.

It was back then that a key accused in the murder case indicated the alleged involvement of the Kanchi seer in the assault case as well.

The seer was granted bail in both the cases.
