Deras must vacate Punjab, says SGPC!

New Delhi: One day after the satewide bandh called by the Sikh activists, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has said it is still demanding the closure of all Dera ashrams in Punjab by May 27.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said in clear terms "I don’t understand the law much, but all Deras in Punjab should be closed."

Meanwhile, as the Sunday deadline nears close, social activist Swami Agnivesh is reportedly in touch with both the Sikh activists and the Dera Sacha Sauda leaders.

Later talking to reporters, Agnivesh said he was hopeful about a peaceful and early settlement of the issue between the Deras and Akal Takht.
