OTT App Banned: The government has explicitly directed Internet Service Providers to disable or remove public access to these websites within India.
The government has ordered a ban on more than 20 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix among others, for “having obscene, vulgar and in some cases, pornographic content”. The apps were listed as being in violation of various laws, particularly regarding “indecent” representation of women.
A significant step forward: After years of HJS campaigning for OTT regulation, significant awakening campaigns by stalwarts like @UdayMahurkar Ji, @scsb_f, @GemsOfBollywood @SanjeevSanskrit Ji, @swati_gs Ji, @Vishnu_Jain1 Ji & several cultural Yoddhas, the Government of India… pic.twitter.com/b1mFHSWp0f

In an order dated July 23, The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the action was taken in consultation with the MHA, MWCD, MeitY, Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA), industry bodies FICCI and CII, and experts in the field of women rights and child rights. The ministry explicitly directed Internet Service Providers to disable or remove public access to these websites and apps within India, under provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021
Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has also been running a campaign for the past few years demanding a ban on web series and apps that serve obscene content. The Samiti has raised its voice on this issue through trends, memorandum submissions, agitations, and other means.
Nature of banned content
The ministry’s notification stated three broad categories of content under which the OTT platforms have been banned:
● Content included sexual innuendos and in some cases long portions of sexually explicit scenes involving nudity thereby being pornographic in nature. “There was hardly any storyline, theme or message in a social context. A large portion of the content was obscene and vulgar,” it added.
● Depiction of nudity and sex in several inappropriate contexts including family relationships.
● Content of the platforms in violation of section 67 of the IT Act, section 292 of the IPC, and section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. Some platforms published sexually explicit content in violation of the Section 67A of the IT Act.
