Mumbai: Youth beaten up over ‘love jihad’ claim; Taken into custody for allegedly kidnapping the girl

The Ambernath police took the Youth into custody for allegedly kidnapping the girl and sent him to a child correction home

After a purported video of a Muslim youth getting beaten up by a mob outside the Bandra railway station in Mumbai surfaced on social media Tuesday, the railway police are set to register an FIR against the assaulters. The mob allegedly raised ‘love jihad’ allegations against the Muslim youth travelling with a Hindu girl.

Bandra railway police officials said the incident happened on July 21. In the video, the mob is seen assaulting the youth wearing a maroon shirt, accusing him of eloping with the minor Hindu girl. The girl wearing a black burqa is seen trying to save the youth even as members of the mob punches and kicks him.

The youth and the 16-year-old girl had run away from their homes at Ambernath in Thane and come to Mumbai, the police said. The girl’s family had filed a kidnapping case with the Ambernath police and figured out she was planning to leave the city with the youth from the Bandra station.

A mob reached the Bandra terminus and inquired RPF personnel from which platform a Lucknow-bound train would leave. More people soon entered the terminus, and they dragged the Muslim youth and the girl outside. They informed RPF that they were taking the duo to Nirmal Nagar police station, according to the police.

The Ambernath police later took the youth into custody in a kidnapping case and sent him to a child correction home after he claimed he was also a minor.
