Comrade ousted from party for conducting ‘Ganapathi Homam’

Kannur: CPI (M) has suspended a branch committee secretary in the red bastion of Kannur for conducting a ‘Ganapathi homam’ as part of house warming. KP Chandran, Kulappuram branch secretary in the Cheruthazham panchayath near Pazhayangadi was suspended recently for three months.

Though the communist lifestyle is based on the Marxian concept of dialectical materialism, the Kerala comrades, majority of whom are Hindus, have often secretly shed all those materialistic inhibitions by entering temples and actively participating in religious rituals. The Pazhani temple visit by late Marxist ideologue and former Chief Minister EMS Namboodirippad had sparked off a controversy in the late 80’s.

It was in the mid-90’s that the CPI(M) released a secret circular for their cadre asking them to play an active role in all the administrative bodies in temples to avoid the alleged infiltration of RSS sympathizers in these bodies.

The Marxists, who had opposed spiritual personalities and institutions, are now attending many of the programmes organised by the Mata Amritanandamayi Matt and the Art of Living Foundation. The praising words poured by Forests Minister Benoy Viswam and Power Minister AK Balan attending a function organised by the Matt had evoked protests from the conservative party cadres.
