Ponda (Goa): ‘Colors’ channel has started  telecast of a new serial titled ‘Veer Shivaji’ from 2nd September based on the life history of Chhatrapati Shivaraya. There are many things which are controversial in the serial right from its title to certain incidents and characters. This has resulted in devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who believe in true history, opposing the serial. Some objectionable incidents are given below.

The title ‘Veer Shivaji’ devalues Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

1. Instead of naming the serial, that narrates the life history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, made to pay tributes to him as ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’, it has been given devaluing name as ‘Veer Shivaji’. (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated five Mughal kings to crown himself as the king by establishing ‘Hindvi Swaraj’ during Mughal invasions which is a matter of pride for all Hindus. It will be paying respect to him if he is addressed as ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’. But it is most condemnable that the producers of the serial and the channel ‘Colors’ have referred to him as only ‘Veer’ ! – Editor SP)

2. It was shown in the serial on 3rd September that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as young boy, stole 4 gunny bags of grains in the night from the godown of Adilshah to help a farmer. (It is most despicable to make up new stories and show Shivaraya as a thief. Valiant Chhatrapati had threatened Aurangzeb’s army to either pay tax else it would be recovered by looting ‘Surat’. He never stole anything ! – Editor SP)

3. Chhatrapati comes when a ‘Sardar’ under Adilshah’s rule accuses a poor farmer and beats him up. Chhatrapati ties the ‘sardar’ to a horse and drags him to a desert. There he is caught by Adilshah’s soldiers. Chhatrapati’s friends then send cattle giving him a chance to escape. In the chaos, however, his turban and a necklace worn by him, are left behind. Such imaginary incidents have been included in the said serial. (This is distortion of history by the producers of the serial and ‘Colors’ channel. It is insulting to show that the turban worn by Chhatrapati touches the ground. The producers and Colors channel should render apology to all devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji who are loyal to history ! – Editor SP) Wrong history is shown and viewers are misled about historical facts. The devotees of Chhatrapati are registering their protest on the following contacts.
