Protest rally organized against proposed abattoir in Navi Mumbai

New Mumbai: Jain Muni Virag Sagarji informed in a press conference here that the proposed abattoir in Navi Mumbai will be opposed as non-violence is the culture of India. There will be protest against the abattoir on behalf of ‘Navi Mumbai Kattalkhana Virodhi Samiti’. About 150 organizations including VHP, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Patanjali Yoga Samiti, Navi Mumbai Jain Sthanak Sangh, Swaminarayan Gurukul etc. have expressed their support in opposing the proposed abattoir. On Sunday, 5th December, a rally will be taken out starting from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk at 3.00 p.m. It will conclude into a meeting on the ground near Merchant Gymkhana in Sector 4 , Vashi. The meeting will be attended by Saints and religious leaders, stated Virat Sagarji.

The Municipal Corporation is proposing to construct an abattoir in Shiravane industrial area. 150 organizations have come together to oppose the same. Jain ‘Munis’ said that opposition for proposed abattoir was in support of protection of animals and environment. Thousands of litres of water and electricity will be used for the abattoir; besides the animal blood will adversely affect the environment. The residents of Navi Mumbai are not getting water throughout the day. If the abattoir is supplied water, it may create water shortage for the residents. It is shown that abattoirs are set up for citizens; but as a matter of fact, 80% of the meat is exported which brings 5% foreign exchange. If cattle is maintained in an agricultural country like ours; it will be helpful to grow more crop and be self sufficient which will also fetch 10-15% foreign exchange, claimed Jain ‘Munis’.
