Hubli (Karnataka): Hindu Janajagruti Samiti will stage a protest demonstration at KC Circle here on Thursday, opposing the government’s "interference" in the affairs of Hindu temples.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Samiti’s Venkatartamana Nayak said the government’s taking over the administration of temples has dealt a serious blow to the Hindu religion.

Nayak felt that temples are being taken over keeping an eye on the revenue it generates and not from the religion or spirituality point of view. He said the premises of some temples, which have been denied to preach the religion, have become the den of illegal activities.

A committee was formed under the leadership of Justice Rama Jois following writ petitions opposing the takeover of temples by the government. Nayak said the committee is unable to do anything positive as far as the development of temples is concerned. There is nothing new in its recommendations, he claimed.

Stating that many temples of historical importance are in dire straights due to the "negligence" of government officials, Nayak charged the government with spending the revenue generated in temples for the development of places of worship of other religions. He said Samiti will submit a memorandum to the chief minister through tahsildar on Thursday.
